Lot Of Barking Dogs Round Upton Park!
i bought this on the strength of the colossal 'rizzla skank', and a liking for prime dillinger material (bit of a minefield, quality wise, especially post 1980), and it is a very good collection overall, but decidedly out of kilter with traditional deejay albums. a little research showed it to be a mix of u.k. built rhythms overseen by producer, clem bushay, and several jamaican rhythms brought over here by same, the whole being a mostly british project. and it's mostly a very satisfying listen indeed!outside of some blistering singles, it is acknowledged dillinger's finest works are the 'cb 200' and 'bionic dread' albums, but this gives things a different twist in that sometimes it appears the rhythms are the headlines, although the deejaying from both gents is top class. also it's not set out in a classic 'clash' style (the norm being a side each or alternating tracks), being weighted in dillinger's favour. both the opening and closing tracks are in duet style, the remainder solo, the bulk by dillinger with 7, trinity with 3.after the towering opener, trinity romps through a zingy take on 'don't leave me this way', before dillinger takes over voicing over some addictive lazy, jazzy rhythms, tackling some very english subjects like 10p for the subway, and manchester united v liverpool? see the twist? trinity's 'jamaican dollars' is perhaps the best known track on display, before dillinger's tribute to 'shelly with the electric belly' (yes). one more from trinity and then the remainder is mr bullock's, the rhythms getting harder and more traditional toward the end, 'natty passing through a curfew' and 'natty dread is not the prodigal son' both being killer. the closer 'starsky and hutch' is in duet style, and as good as 'rizzla skank' is is how awful this is - massively rank (in a bad way), cluttered, busy and aimless, which is a dreadful shame and a poor way to finish what is a highly enjoyable album. but then again dillinger always seems to ruin things big style eventually - this was still two years before the world class abysmal 'funkey punk'!this is well above 'worth having' and a great example of 'outside the box' rhythm building with a definite u.k./jamaican feel!

Crash
I used to love this album but this remastered copy seems to have lost its impact.Maybe it is due to the sands of time but it is certainly not helped by inaccuracies in the booklet. The notes are written by someone who is clearly not familiar with the two artists, claiming they are solo tracks in a "clash" style. You only have to listen to the album to see some tracks were recorded by the DJs together while some are individual solos. And if the writer needed help working out which are duets he only need look at the songwriting credits.
