An intoxicating and haunting story
Rheea Mukherjee’s debut, THE BODY MYTH, mesmerizes with intoxicating meditations on the nature of love, mental health, happiness, spirituality, grief, and health. As her young, widowed protagonist is drawn into relationships with a married couple, Mukherjee entices readers to reconsider societal expectations and the many shapes of love and grief. Framed by the mythology of the fictional Rasagura fruit, and filled with mysticism, philosophy, and poetry, THE BODY MYTH will stay with the readers long after the last page ends. Although Mukherjee tackles weighty topics, the book is entirely readable and engaging, the characters charming, flawed, and bursting with love and longing. I never felt overpowered by the big ideas; instead, I was swept away, just like the characters.

Astounding
I couldn't put this book down. As I got towards the final chapters, I kept forcing myself to read more slowly because I just did not want it to end. Beautifully written, heartfelt, and wise. Absolutely lovely. Enjoyed it so much that I forced my entire book club to read it again with me.

Spare, gorgeous prose. The most exciting new voice in literary fiction this year.

A Unique and Bold Story
The Body Myth takes you to a world that bends the rules of morality, but as the story weaves along it manages to brings you back and leave satisfied. It's a truly unique and nuanced novel for those who want to expand their mind, with the setting in India making it even more interesting. Life as a young widow, chronic illness, overprotective family, boundaries of love, and secrets: lots to discuss here making this a great option for a book club.

LOVED everything about this book
I LOVED everything about this book...Something about it felt so real to me. It would go from lofty spiritual ideals and philosophies back to mundane every day life that included twitter and searching down contacts on facebook. I loved the characters, and the way the protaganist struggled to create and find meaning in her life. I love the way it all came full circle in a way that I wasn't expecting. And then, hidden among the storyline, I would find these deep truths that I keep thinking about... does eating animal meat create fear in our bodies? Such a fascinating concept and one that I had not heard before. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time to come...

Tedious to get through, like wading through treacle
I picked this up as part of a books haul last weekend and was sorely disappointed. I love reading debut authors and sometimes you find real treasures like Tomi Adeyemi last year. The story had so much potential, but it was wasted on ordinary observations and thin characters. Read like a college essay.

Powerful story set in India of Love, Friendship, Grief, and Sexuality
The Body Myth is a beautifully told story of a young woman in India suffering from the grief of losing her husband. The raw and honest voice of the narrator, Mira, makes the story compelling and gives the sense of a glimpse into an ordinary life that has its extraordinary turns. I also enjoyed the meditations on Western literature and mental health as seen through the eyes of these young, cosmopolitan characters.
