Helpful...but only if you subscribe to AA and the Twelve Steps
Overall, this book is helpful. The content is good addressing what the disease of addiction is, what recovery will be like, action steps, and advanced recovery topics. For me it felt a bit too focused on high performers. Also, the only information/advise provided was of AA and working the Twelve Steps. The author does a good job of addressing the steps and offering a way for an individual to personally define them thus potentially process them better, but if you don't buy into AA and the Twelve steps there is no use for this book.

My life has changed!
I read this book after seeing the doctor and Steven Tyler on Dr. Oz. I read it while drinking a bottle of wine in my left hand. After I finished reading how alcohol affects every organ in your body in detail and about self-medicating to get more dopamine in the brain, I saw how I was in a vicious circle. I was self-medicating my schizophrenia. I drank two bottles of red wine every night for 13 years. I quit when I was halfway through the book 16 months ago and virtually don't have a craving to drink anymore. Thank you Mr. Tyler and Dr. Haroutunian for such a fine book. Now since I joined AA a day after reading it I have new friends and am having THE TIME OF MY LIFE!!!!! They are my bananas. If I leave them I will get split and then smashed and drunk. Thank you for getting me out of the rut I was in. Now at 52, I am looking forward to a very long and happy life. I used to wonder why Christians always wanted everlasting life. Finally my question was answered. We have so much fun in this life that we want to live forever. I didn't know it was possible to be this happy. We used to have a beautiful home, but left it for a 700 foot old trailer so my husband could get health insurance. I have to say that it doesn't matter where you live, if you have the right mind frame. I have written a book about the emotional problems I was facing having been kidnapped and sexually trafficked at 13. It is called Snatched By The Devil and can be found on Amazon.com. Check out my author page on facebook under the name Jeana Hawkins.

Keeping an open mind and working the angles
On time, arrived undamaged. Haven't opened the book yet. Have a full library of things to read and workbooks to do. But, I am still working the program as a recovering alcoholic and am sure it will be of benefit, otherwise I would not have ordered it.

Replacement Book
My AA sponsor lent me this book to read. My 5 month old dog ate the acknowledgements and the forward. I had to replace it. It is a great book for any high bottom or very smart recovering alcoholics. I recommend this book for professionals. And now I have my own copy less the front part of the book. It starts on Chapter One now.

It may save your or loved ones life.
Ordered for my brother who is battling addiction. He requested it. Didn't read it right away. I think maybe he wasn't quite ready. But something happened and he was afraid and didn't want to be defined by his addiction. He's read the book and it truly is helping him. He is putting to action the twelve steps and taking accountability. If you or love one suffers from addiction, get this book.

Being Sober
I bought this book to understand the ordeal of why people become addicted and to try and help friends and love ones overcome their additions by using this book as a guide to get sober and recover. Gave me great insight and understanding of an addict and their behavior. Addiction affects all walks of life (to include the author of this book who is the Director of the Betty Ford Clinic). But addicts must understand that their addictive behavior not only ruins their life but has a negative impact on everyone around them and only they can do something about it. Being an addict is a very self centered behavior. They can only blame themselves for their addiction and destructive behavior that causes them to loose everything in their lives. So they are the only ones that can turn their life around by conquering this addiction. First step is to read this book and use it as a tool and become determined to live a sober life. They can't do it by themselves--they need help.

Written by someone who's 'been there'
An excellent book and really motivating/inspiring (in a scary kind of way) if you are looking for that extra persuasion to cut the booze.....

The NEW 'Big Book'
"Within these pages lies a $50,000 five-star treatment that works" but the pages are read to you, word for word. That's what unabridged means. Great for long periods of time behind the wheel - sober of course, to remind you why you are interested in this book in the first place.Look for other reviews about the book to get a feel of what's in it, as the content is exactly the same - or better yet, just buy the book or this audio version. You've probably spent more than that on your substance of choice in any given week anyways. Or buy both the book and the audio version and create your own read-along-story book learning environment like you had when you were a kid - just learning to read - because honestly, you are actually learning something again. You are learning how to be sober. The language in here is very easy to read and structured in a flow of information that will gradually sink in. If all AA groups and literature adopted Dr. Harry Haroutunian's version of the 12 Steps as a new, modern, interpretation for consideration, I feel that in and of itself would serve as a profound break through in sober thinking for newcomers. From Chapter 5 of the book, Track 8, 00:00 of the cd: 'STEP ONE: "There is a power that wants to kill me." … STEP TWO: "There is a power that wants me to live" … STEP THREE: "Do I want to live or die?" ' Good luck!

What I did not know about addiction.
After having a bad experience with a delivery service that Amazon, Amazon did an awesome job in turing it around and sending it to me the next day. I have just started to listen to this audio and WOW, what a surprise. It is well done and very descriptive so that one can understand more of the addiction.

DOES DEPRESSION HINDER YOU IN ENJOYING FRIENDSHIPS AND LIFE'S ENJOYMENT
A lot of interesting facts about alcohol and other addictions falling under the disease list. It is interesting to listen to this CD because all of us fall under some kind of sickness. Shopping addiction,, workaholic. high maintenance spending Covers Co-decency big time. I recommend this book or CD to everyone and not just because you think it concerns alcohol alone.BUT were you aware alcoholism is a disease just as much as diabetes? This CD explains it all.
