SURFACEDESIGN: Material Landscapes

Sincere designers create gardens of freedom.
A long-time follower of this firms' work, it is important that this book has finally arrived. Well-written descriptions explore the idea of their private gardens and public landscapes, and it is clear that the authors (firm partners) insist that design have an idea generated from the specifics of a place and developed through a deep understanding of materials. The projects are generously illustrated with appealing photographs. The images do not have captions and the site plans do not identify garden area names, which is a graphic decision that supports the firms' repeated proposal that people need to enjoy a sense of freedom in a garden and that landscape architects must design in open, non-prescriptive ways to allow that to happen. The names of the authors are not even included on the book cover, which is another illustration of the firms' philosophy that the project is what matters. Even their use of the word "suggest" as the verb linking design intent and user experience is why this book must be read by anyone - student, practitioner, or client - who values the hard work of sincere design.
