Not for beginners. I wanted something to help me do a layout... This went into way too much depth. So wasn't any help.

Great Ideas

Too much emphasis on Mr. Koester's personal layout.

Mr Koester at his best, far more than a set of instructions, this book is the basis for thought on the subjects allied to railroads ( railways)

This was my first Koester book I've read. In "Planning Your Model Railroad", Koester doesn't emphasize the 'model' part as much as the 'railroad' part. He really gets into the extreme nitty gritty details of how to model a realistic railroad with a tone that might be considered elitist to a beginner who just wants a layout. He pushes methodology and language that, I suppose, is common to hardliners like him. It's not what I wanted nor expected, but probably what I needed.
