Information Architecture: For the Web and Beyond

I can see why this book is in its 4th edition
It would be interesting hearing how this book is rated by students. This book reminds me of its origins, written by consultants who have learned best practices and would like to share their experience with other practitioners. And that is why I gave it 5 stars. I would not think this book could be used in an introduction to information architecture. Especially after graduating in computer science. This book is much more for practitioners on their first project or wanting to improve their existing methodology with new ideas. I found the book to follow exactly the process we have on my first project. Even anticipating the same questions I asked regarding waterfall versus agile. The whole book betrays the author's as experienced practitioners. And that is a good thing.Initially, I hesitated to purchase the book thinking it would be too focused on e-commerce sites, and I am working on a government intranet site with records management. However, the steps to developing a successful IA were presented in an industry agnostic perspective. Examples were taken from both government and public corporation websites.

Could not resist but throw it away into trash bin
I have read about 100 pages and realised that can't finish the book because it is neither interesting nor useful for me.Author argues a lot about what is good web design, how to create better user experience in searching information in web sites. But I don't see a reason to make entire science of it. After 100 pages I haven't found any fresh idea.Epigraphs before each chapter spice up contents at some degree but that is not enough for me.So I have thrown the book into trash bin to free space for more useful technology books.

A foundational read
The classic polar bear book! I was late to read this, but was delightfully surprised at the modern nature of the 4th edition's content. It was fun to read the author's commentary on the evolution of the field of IA and I was able to fill in some big knowledge gaps on content in UX from classic sitemaps, search semantics, and even reports to the client. The parts on research are shallow (intended), but otherwise I would recommend this as a solid foundational read on content strategy.

Wish I'd read this sooner.
Great book! Heavy loaded with great content and structuring concepts as well as practical practices and approaches. Def one of the better UX and IA material. You'll find your self referring to this book many times.

If you're planning on, or already provide good quality, in-depth content on your website then this book is essential reading. With more and more competitor products and websites appearing every day in even the most obscure niches getting the structure of your content right makes a huge difference and if you're not sure what constitutes 'good' content that is structured to fit your different audiences then this book will help you understand and achieve it.

Excellent resource to any content manager
This book really jumps in on the side of the user, and helps you to understand what approaches to make or not make in terms of providing the right content. It has helped me to understand the angle to take when considering a comprehensive content strategy structure.
