Useful for anyone who is interested in Direct Instructon
A helpful guide on a evidenced based theory that can help many children. Would have liked more concrete examples on how to use it instead of essays on why it was good.

Better books out there
Every chapter is written by a different author, so the writing is inconsistent, with some better than others. Moreover, there isn't a clear progression of the material, with one chapter building on the previous ones like you'd get with a single author. The format of the book also isn't great: the print is a bit small for me and so are the pages. The later is important because there are a few chapters that contain large diagrams, which means a lot of page flipping back and forth as you read the text associated with the diagrams. This is an unsound method of presentation.Still, there is some useful information scattered about in the book, so it's worth adding to your library at some point, but I'd recommend reading Greg Ashman's "The Power of Explicit Teaching and Direct Instruction" first. One of the chapters of his book appears in this one.

V V useful for teachers and those supporting them
This is my favourite of the Research Ed books - section on ‘fading’ (not the hairstyle) is really useful for teachers trying to understand how to balance their support with pupils working independently

Tough going..
As someone who had read lots of popular educational books from Didau, Christodoulou, Wiliam, WIllingham, Lemov, etc. I have found this book very disappointing. The writing is very repetitive and difficult to follow in places; I am not sure if this book was rushed or just poorly edited (see the last paragraph in the attached photo). There are at least two other examples in early chapters of sentences just not making any sense.I am two thirds into the book, hopefully the writing improves in later chapters..

Awful book.
Some chapters have conclusion based on opinion rather than evidence and some are just poorly written. Avoid.
