Before & After Page Design

Great even for non-designers like me
This is the sort of book I normally wouldn't buy - I might borrow it at the library, but not being a designer (I'm a writer), I don't really keep much design reference on hand. This book, however, has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf. I ran across Before & After magazine several years ago and fell in love with McWade's clean, clever style. Since I needed to make some marketing materials for my own business on the cheap, I bought his book.McWade's templates make it easy for even a noob to lay out everything from a promotional postcard to stationery to ... well, any written materials. People to whom I've shown my own pieces (based on McWade's designs) have been impressed with their visual punch. (The paper airplane flyer [get it?] was a real hit.)And he explains why he makes the choices he does design-wise in language even a layperson can understand.I'll probably never do any serious design work myself, but McWade's Before & After (the book, the website and the magazine) have made me appreciate good design like never before.

Design Expertise Galore!
I purchased John McWade's BEFORE & AFTER: HOW TO DESIGN COOL STUFF, BEFORE & AFTER: GRAPHICS FOR BUSINESS, and BEFORE & AFTER: PAGE DESIGN, and I love all three books! I subscribed to McWade's Before & After magazine for years, and it was solid gold. These three books are all excellent, and continue that fine tradition. They feature hundreds of design examples, including variations on each one, explanations of the design choices being made, and information on how to create each effect and layout. I am thrilled with my purchase.

Smart page re-design
Before & after examples are a great way to learn and the book provides plenty of them. What I espcially appreciate is the way McWade explains he choices--he is an excellent teacher. Some designers want to show off but don't really want you to understand their thought process. McWade explains. He wants you to get it. The other thing I appreciate is that his 'afters' don't all look the same--this a designer with a wide repetoire that he is willing to share with others.

More visual, less text. Good book.
John McWade is the best: Much visual material, less text. He talks as much as needed and does the design as functionally and beautifully enough. The book is designed as his design principles also explained in the book. So the book is the proof of itself. I suggest it to graphic or web-mobile designers.

Not what I expected
This book goes into great detail about how to exactly create the author's provided designs. You have to really want to create something exactly like the sample for this to be of any help. But even the explanations seem kind of fragmented and hard to follow, even with the illustrations. I really expected a book that would simply show a lot of "before and after" designs, what made the "after" work better, etc.

John McWade is a genius...
and this is his first book.John knows how to teach design better than anyone I've ever met (or could even imagine!) He understands the leverage points and he has an innate sense of what is good and what's not.I've been subscribing to John's newsletter for five years (and bugging him to write a book for 4) and I can't tell how pleased I am that it's finally done.Move that mouse finger quick! Buy a copy. You won't regret it.Seth GodinAuthor and wanna-be designer

Great design layout book
This book is very handy for the layout guidelines.I got this book from library, and fell in love. Just had to have it on my table when thinking about layouts and design of brochures, business cards, composition. It's like a little encyclopaedia of page design which I highly recommend

E-Book is pixelized!
I *love* Before&After. I own their Master Collection on DVD, and that's why I was eager the get a more in-depth experience with this book. But what's the use of a Graphic Design book when the graphics have much a low resolution? I wish I could get my money back. This book in its e-book format is worthless.
