Rollicking family comedy of men and boys learning together what it takes to be a man. Kevin Sorbo and Amy Grant lead an ensemble cast on a journey from surburbia to the Deep Dark Woods and back with adventure and laughter.

Great Movie
I love Kevin Sorbo's movies. "The Secret Handshake," was funny, suspenseful, and a good down-to-earth family movie. I guess it's politics as to why Amazon is selling Sorbo's movies so cheap.

Time well spent!
The review said it was a "rollicking" fun adventure movie. No, it wasn't. It had a few dry jokes and the adventure part was also understated. It's definitely got flaws - but it's a movie worth watching. I was really looking forward to watching Amy Grant perform. Her part in the movie is important but brief. Her portrayal of the mother caught between a rock and a hard place was wrenching and much deeper acting than the rest of the movie. I was relieved to find the movie not overtly Christian. I like Christians, I am one. But many Christian movies try too hard and just aren't up to professional standards, with the exception of movies by Alex Kendrick.t

Pleasantly Surprised!
I tend to cringe when watching Kevin Sorbo movies. I'm a Christian but find almost all Christian themed movies as sappy, shallow (fluff without real depth), and/or overtly sickly sweet. I typically associate Sorbo with these cringe-worthy flicks, but decided to give this one a shot because of the description. It wasn't 'rollicking' fun, (I envisioned something similar to Daddy' Day Care) but I experienced some true belly laughs. The film had a great message and a lyric from one of the songs eloquently and succinctly expressed it: not every boy becomes a man. It's important to help our boys transition to manhood, to understand that becoming a man isn't about the Adam's apple, or whether they can grow a beard, have a job or drive a car. Being a man is about accepting responsibility for oneself, about stepping up and doing the right thing. This movie touched on a really deep issue with sensitivity. It didn't delve into it with a depth one would find in a drama, but it did do the subject justice, while remaining a comedy. I really enjoyed it. I want my husband and young teen to see it (before sending them out into the woods).

I wouldn't recommend it.
This movie was a disappointment. The "humor" in it was just strange. The midget with the party bus and the half naked guys dancing around the campfire were weird. That coupled with the middle school age kid streaking in his tighty whiteys across the football field made it a movie I wouldn't feel comfortable letting my daughters watch. I was under the impression that this was a Christian movie but there was no Christian message to it at all. It wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen but I wouldn't recommend it.

That's right, five stars!
There is a story here as old as the paintings in the caves of Lascaux. And while this particular story is about becoming a man, the path is same regardless of gender. Forget that it is a movie with scripts, acting, camera shots, editing, and a production, and open your eyes and ears to the story! I was going to write something cleaver as a thinly veiled putdown against those giving this film one star, but it's obvious that they did not make the transition. If they had, then something inside would have resonated with the theme of this film.

Pleasant movie that makes one think about what it means to be a man
A father of three girls has to deal with an inmature kid that wants to date his daughter. The kid is an orphan and does not know what is acceptable so the father has to try to teach him. In the process, we discover he is an orphan himself, so he is able to connect with the kid and initiate him into manhood in an interesting camping trip designed as an initiation cermony. The father ends up being initiated himself in some of the developmental ]=needs he has. Worth watching.,

A Great Movie.
A great story for dad's to show their boys to help them become decent men of God. Good acting all around and a good plot line with lots of good messages of respect for women by boys and men in it.

Not what I expected. The adult male characters all needed as much help as the teen boy. Was hoping for a male role model that young boyscould admire and long to be like. But everyone does learn something and grows a little more.

A disappointing movie; it could have been better.
A very disappointing movie. I expected much better. The adult male characters were really quite pathetic and were certainly NOT positive male role models for a boy.The sound was so bad I had to change the TV's base & treble controls so I could understand what was being said (there are no subtitles available). There was the usual fast-cut editing which I personally find a little disorienting.
