Don't just watch it once, watch it a few times but give it a few months in between. You'll thank yourself later.
I watched this movie, first, a year after it came out (2010). I bits of it later on that year and figured out a little bit more. This is the kind of movie you MUST watch at least three times to make sense of the whole thing. Such a well put-together movie! All the little elements line up, yet are hidden so well. I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it. The plot is great! I haven't seen the original movie that this is based on (The Tale of Two Sisters) but this was good enough for me. You get the horror, the suspense, the mystery, you can be a detective and put pieces together, and talk about jump scares! Watch this at night with no lights on and (in this day and age) plug in your headset. You'll be in for a real treat. The score is awesome as well. As I type this, one more VERY key ingredient of the movie just opened a door. WOW. I love this movie! Oh and Emily Browning <3

Entertaining, with some major flaws
I appreciate what I think they were trying to do with this movie, but the ending still felt like a sucker punch to me. Yes, it “makes sense” superficially, but that doesn’t mean it’s a great plot. There is a line somewhere between playing on an audience’s anticipations, experience, and logic and outright using them. This movie crosses that line, IMO. If you go back and watch good twisty movies, the whole movie backs up the final twist. This one? Just a slap in the face. I mean, why all the ghosts and why do they do what they do? To me, this use of gratuitous ghosts ranks up with cheap jump scares. The Haunting (1963) shows how to do this in a better way.I also think this movie tried to cover too many genres. Like other reviewers noted, this probably would have been better if they had stuck with psycho thriller and left the creepy CGI stuff out.I’ll also note that I’m prejudiced in favor of liking this movie because I have a soft spot for Browning - not because I’m a man (because I’m not) but because she was the little girl from both Ghost Ship and Darkness Falls. I thought she was even better here, and I probably would have liked the movie less if a different actress were cast as Anna.

I just don't get the hype...
There are some really rave reviews here, which after seeing this film, had me thinking they were actually reviewing another film...and these were accidental. There is another film of the same name and clearly a Korean film this one was touted as based on (haven't seen it yet), so it actually seemed plausible. But, no...these are actual reviews of this film from actual people as far as I can tell. I find myself in a minority saying I struggled to make it through this one and started to give up by the halfway point. It's basically sort of like if Disney decided to make a safe little foray into horror. Something they will probably never do, because...well that would be ridiculous. To my point: The scares were just not there, the characters and story are on the safest side of a PG rating, the "amazing plot twist" was sort of obligatory, and the acting intensity is fair to ok across the boards. In fact at various points it almost seemed as if a burst of laughter was about to occur from the cast...or had occurred in a prior take and was being suppressed. Basically even cast and crew aren't buying this stuff as original or scary. I just don't get why so many are rating this 5 stars. It appears they are not too keen on actual horror movies and this one is really safe and easier to digest and go on record as enjoying? Like, Yay! I did it, I watched a real live scary movie! I'm so proud of myself I'm going to give it the highest rating! Wee! For more intrepid horror fans, this is something to sleep to...or better yet, as it might give you sickly sweet and naive nightmares in the process...don't bother and find something better than a barely spooky teen drama about the "semi-dark and marginally troubled" hanna montana sisters.

Lots and Lots of Stupid
This is not a horror movie and not exactly chilling. I was annoyed at the silly stuff that can't be explained. Why were the Kemp children left out in the open by a trail? The sheriff couldn't find them? But everyone knows the story, without the bodies? Why didn't the guy in the sheriff's costume do any police work? He could barely remember child murders in his backyard? What does a 3 strand pearl necklace prove? Even if they weren't crazy popular and on every woman's neck, what could she have been charged with? Shoplifting? Why didn't the girl(s) remove the evil stepmother's pharmacy? Is she supposed to have killed the delivery guy? Did she throw trees off the cliff? How is blocking him from making deliveries keep him away from Anna? I assume she can walk to town. How convenient that obliging ghosts stick around to tell Anna what's up (a really desperate deus ex machina). The makeup for the mom ghost was especially bad. This should have been a believable thriller or a creature feature, not both. The acting was good, except for David Strathairn. He was wasted in this movie. I watched him playing a clueless, catatonic, p*ssy whipped dotard. He deserved better.Elizabeth Banks was wonderful. She was blatantly evil (in Anna's eyes) but so subtle at the same time. Who knew that sweet Elizabeth Banks could be so scary. The actor who played Anna was also very good. Alex was too. The problem is not with the acting. .Sorry, this movie had such dumb moments that I couldn't enjoy it. Again, it was a shame David Strathairn agreed to do this movie. See him in Dolores Claiborne for a real treat: he and Kathy Bates tied to each other. But that's another movie. You might enjoy this one since many people gave it good reviews. Both thumbs down for me. I gave it 3 stars for the acting.

“Kiss a boy, get into trouble.” [Psychologist]
This is the 2009 psychological mystery horror in which amnesiac Anna (Emily Browning) returns home after ten months in a psychiatric institution following her attempted suicide after her terminally ill mother died in a boathouse fire. Anna reunites with her sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel), and together they stand against their fathers younger girlfriend Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), who had been their mother's live-in nurse. Anna soon has nightmares, which the sisters believe are messages from their mother, warning them that she was murdered by Rachel.Ultimately this is a clever remake of the 2003 South Korean film ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’ but here the opening sequences tell you too much, destroying much of the suspense and intrigue instead of leaving you piece it together –the way Anna has too [lose a *]. The acting, particularly Elizabeth Banks, is convincing while the soundtrack is eerie and crisp, as is the picture quality. The single disc opens to a 5 language screen [English and Scandinavian], then plays 4 trailers [with option to go to main menu –which was a nice touch, gain a *] before offering play, audio options [English or audio descriptive], subtitles [English, Audio descriptive, Scandinavian languages or none], special features [unlocking the uninvited, deleted scenes, alternate ending] and scene selection.Playing like a cross between ‘The Grudge’, ‘Gattica’ and ‘The hand that rocks the cradle’ this 15 rating does have some swearing -mainly mild or religious based, there are some adult themes and sex toys are seen in a drawer but there is no nudity, the violence is generally insinuated and after-the-fact although there are still a number of intense scenes and ‘jumpy’ moments to be had. With a few twists and turns this remains entertaining being sufficiently different to keep you interested and betters many 18 ratings.

Das Cover wird dem Film nicht gerecht. Der Film ist BESSER!
Respekt!
