Learn to Play Guitar with Metallica Book/Online Audio

Excellent for the beginner
Just started playing guitar and it's frustrating to not be able to play anything I like. So this has been great to get me started and has bits of songs I like so it is very motivating. There is a need for more books like this that are stepping stones but contain the songs you want to play. I like how it is progressive and it looks like by the end of it, I will be able to start learning from regular tab books.

Excellent basic guitar for Metallica fans
The only complaint I have is that my guitar doesn't sound like theirs! The book covers the usual basics that other beginning guitar books cover, except all the practice songs are stripped down Metallica songs. From the very beginning, when you are only using a few strings, I can recognize the music as Master of Puppets. The Metallica songs continue from there and kept me interested. The accompanying disk is really only optional, but helps hear how the songs are supposed to sound.I loved this product, and would recommend it to family or friends for anyone into Metallica that wants to learn guitar.

Meh
I have tried to learn the guitar in the past, and my main obstacle was keeping interest. I didn't want to spend the first six months playing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and other simple songs to learn the basics. I saw this book and bought it, because finally, I could learn the guitar through playing bits and pieces from songs that I know and like. AWESOME! Bought a decent used guitar, and hoped to learn how to play.Pros: Keeping interest isn't a problem because you're playing songs that you already know, and like. While you aren't learning entire songs, the bits and pieces of each are small enough to not feel overwhelming, but long enough to give you a big confidence boost as a beginner. After learning a couple of the parts to the song, it doesn't feel like you have a big jump to leaning the rest of it. Last, having the referece CD with the book is also nice, although it has it's issues too.Cons: Having the CD is nice, except it sounds like Metallica, distortion and all. So instead of sounding anything like what you are playing out of your amp, it sounds completely different. Another problem is that there are no tips, at all, in this book. Can't quite get the fingering down, keep getting a buzz noise when you play certain chords, etc.? Too bad, hope you have access to youtube and google so you can get help with your issues.I gave this 3/5. As a complete beginner, it was nice to finally have a book that kept my interest and gave me a good starting point for this hobby and it was a decent price for what it is. But I think it would be better to learn guitar with Metallica after you learned guitar with someone else and got the basics down first.

My first guitar book
Metallica was what got me into guitar and this book is pretty good at teaching you the basics. I would not solely focus on this book however since there is a lot of ground not covered and some thing not explained in enough detail. I used all of the Troy stetina books to learn guitar and those are fantastic, this book however is a great supplement to those however since you also need to learn music and these are easy enough for the beginning guitarist, although some of the scale examples are played very fast and could not do that for a few years but just keep coming back to those hard ones. I would also recommend the second book too as well as riffer madness by dimebag darrell (if you also like Pantera) and the sound and the fury (same style as riffer madness but with Kirk Hammett) and these will give you more riffs and song examples to practice as you become a more intermediate guitar player. Once you get advanced enough you can learn their solos note for note as well as many others (Chris Zoupa has a wonderful YouTube channel for learning metal solos and is a really cool guy) and I would suggest getting speed mechanics for lead guitar, rock discipline, intense rock, and fretboard mastery and just keep trying to learn more advanced solos and you will get to where you want to be eventually. But to summarize, in addition to a more complete rock/metal teaching method, this gives good variety with song examples and goes over basic skills a beginner needs to get down.

I couldn't be happier with this purchase
I don't know anything about playing guitar. I purchased this for my 11year old when he expressed an interest in learning how to play guitar. We homeschooling and he is using this for some of his independent study. He got to lesson 6 today and it suddenly all clicked for him. I couldn't be happier with this purchase!

Not for beginners...
My son has played guitar for 2 years and we can tell you after studying this book you need to have played a few years before getting to the first note. It's not the book I'm knocking...it's the reviews that state a beginner can use this as a tool.

Neueinsteiger könnten also auf Probleme stoßen.Toll ist die Stückauswahl und die Themenwahl. Man übt Rhythmusgitarre, dann kommen erste Licks / kurze Soli.

Good for a very inexperienced player
This book might be fun for a someone just starting to play; learn a couple licks from the band that has inspired countless players. be warned though, the riffs tend to watered down versions of the actual songs and you are basically learning very small parts of songs from the entire Metallica catalogue. If you are already up and running with your playing it won't make sense to get this book as you likely already have looked up many of these licks on the Internet.Overall, I can see this book being fun for a brand new player but it won't really build your playing abilities. In the long run you are better off buying a book of scales or real technique-building exercises which will get you to playing REAL Metallica a lot faster. For the price though, I suppose I got my money's worth.
