Not always a pleasant experience.
5 stars for vendor. 3 stars for product. Having a lot of problems getting this product to work. Cuts out while it's working giving messages like "not supported" "no Signal" going to contact kanex soon. As long as you leave this product on it will always work. Too many quirks. I had pretty much given up on physical media but I wanted to give a blu-ray another shot. When it works it works but I can't go through this dance every time I want to put an old dvd in my player. It just started to play After saying "no Signal" for nearly an hour. No knock against vendor. Got it fast considering Canadian Thanksgiving was happening.

Supports 24/176.4kHz over coax for SACD for 2 channel audio
My Sony UBP-X800 only outputs 44.1kHz over its coaxial output for SACD, but I knew it converted to 176.4kHz PCM over HDMI. I got this to alleviate the issue and it works flawlessly, without adding or subtracting anything from what I can tell. I have a 2 channel integrated amplifier that I really enjoy, so I use a high quality external DAC over coaxial for all my digital needs. This has limitations for that as discussed below in the Downsides sectionYou need to select the 5.1 channel button (light will turn on) to get any sample rate over 48kHz - set your player for 2 channel audio and the player will send 2 channel audio at a higher sampling rate. I have not tested multi-channel SACD at all, so I have no idea if you can get SACD Multi to work. I have not tested the HDMI out, the Optical out, or the analog out (the DAC chip in there ain't that great but would probably be just fine for TV speakers and not high quality audio).Downsides:1) 2 channel switch only supports up to 48kHz. This is mostly fine, but if you feed it a 5.1 signal higher than 48kHz, it will downsample and send that over as 48kHz to your DAC.2) Although the 5.1 switch allows for up to 24/192kHz PCM over coax, all you'll hear is the front left and front right audio channels if your Blu-Ray player can't downmix 7.1 or 5.1 audio to PCM stereo, so you're missing out on a bunch of channels if you're going into a 2 channel DAC. To be fair, that's what it's supposed to do, but it would have been nice if the 2 channel mode supported higher sample rates. My old OPPO BDP-203 could downmix audio to 2 channel, so that's one thing the Sony UBP-X800 is sorely lacking. If you're using this into an HDMI receiver, then this is a non-issue.3) Lights are kind of bright (kind of), and it says it uses 2 watts of power, most likely on load, but not sure how much when nothing is being fed to it.Audio Specs:HDMI Out:LPCM 2.0CH: 24bit/20bit/16bit, 192kHz/176kHz/96kHz/88kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzLPCM 7.1ch,24bit/20bit/16bit, 192kHz/176kHz/96kHz/88kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzAC3 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzDTS 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHzOne bit audio 5.1ch, 44.1kHzDolby Digital 7.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHzDTS HD 7.1ch,48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzDolby True HD 7.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzToslink(SPDIF)Out:Supports LPCM 2.0CH@ 24bit/20bit/16bit, 192kHz/176kHz/96kHz/88kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzAC3 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHzDTS 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHzOne bit audio 5.1ch, 44.1kHz

SACD hi-res baby!
I have a good collection of SACDs and wanted to play them 2ch hi-res on my office desk, where the real estate is the premium. Full-sized universal players with analogue outs such as Oppos would take up too much space. I settled on miniature Sony BDP-S6500 (~$80) and TEAC UD-301 as my SACD player and DAC. I needed an HDMI audio de-embedder (extractor) to connect the two, but a cheaper model (AV Access) that I bought from Amazon failed to transmit hi-res.Enter Kanex pro. First, my setup: An HDMI cable connects the S6500 out and Kanex in. Toslink connects Kanex out and the UD301 in (coaxial works too). Another HDMI connects Kanex out and a computer monitor (to view the S6500 menu). In S6500 Music Setting, select Super Audio CD and DSD 2ch. I select Auto for Digital Audio Output (PCM should work too), as the DSD signal will be automatically converted to (reportedly) 24/176.4 PCM when the S6500 detects an output device that does not support DSD such as Kanex. IT IS IMPORTANT to select 5.1 as the input option for Kanex (the selector button is located next to HDMI input). Viola, my UD-301 receives 176.4 inputs. Selecting 2ch as the Kanex input limits the signal to 44.1.If Kanex had failed, I would have considered replacing the UD-301 with Essence HDACC II. I am glad Kanex worked.

Apple TV 4 people, this is the one you're looking for
As the title says; Apple TV 4 people, this is the one you're looking for. I was looking for a device that does exactly what this one does, which is to allow simultaneous playback through HDMI and audio out. I wanted to be able to have the Apple TV play through the TV without having the receiver powered on, otherwise it's too complicated for the wife and kids to use. At the same time, I also wanted to be able to use streaming music apps, such as iheartradio, and play the audio through my receiver so it can play through my outdoor speakers without having the TV on. I currently have the 3.5" audio out routing through my receiver (the digital audio works too) and the HDMI cable running to the TV. Obviously there is a delay between the two when they're both on at the same time, but that isn't how I intend to use the setup - just one or the other at a time.
