Wonderful illustrations, good information.
I bought this for my 7 year old grandson and we read it together. The text has lots of good information about the Coastal Redwoods. The illustrations tell a parallel story of a boy reading the book while on the subway and entering the world of the redwoods (even climbing up into the canopy). The book did a good job of conveying the amazing facts of these giants (lots of Wows!).

Beautiful and fun book for kids to learn about the Redwoods
[Originally reviewed on chalkacademy(dot)com]Both of my children are obsessed with Jason Chin’s books! His specialty is science, and he presents interesting facts through relatable storytelling. While the details are perfect for my 7-year-old daughter, my son stays occupied by the captivating illustrations. Great overview to the Redwood trees featuring a young Asian-American boy who is adventurous with hiking and climbing. I also love how the story starts off with the boy reading his own book and ends with him leaving his book on a bench for another child to discover - such a clever detail!

Wow! Absolutely amazing book
I learned about this author and book from a recent webinar and was fascinated by the concept of the book. It is so beautiful and expertly done. I'm very impressed with the way the illustrations have been done, showing the book inside the book like we are part the story and the boy's journey of discovering the redwoods and learning alongside with him. The text is a bit long but very informative. It makes the learning process more fun with these illustrations.

Picture book version of The Wild Trees!
This book is a children's version of The Wild Trees by Richard Preston, with beautiful illustrations of redwoods. I have read The Wild Trees a couple times, and then next time I read it I will look at Redwoods, to augment the drawings in Wild Trees. I especially like the pictures of the un-named boy as he does tree climbing (like Steve Sillett), finding ferns, animals and the views as he goes up to the top of the crown. There is another picture placing a redwood next to a 30 story skyscraper that is good, too. If you loved The Wild Trees, you need this companion book, which was inspired by Preston's book.

Awesome, but his Coral Reefs holds my kid's attention much better.
Awesome, but his Coral Reefs holds my kid's attention much better. Read this to 6yo & 3yo regularly. Good information to be sure. Maybe it's a little less interesting for the kids right now. Great art. Love the idea. Check out Coral Reefs too.

Fabulous book.
I got this for my 7 year old grandson who loved Jason Chin’s book about the Grand Canyon, also an excellent book. We both thought it was great. Plenty of information but not overwhelming for a 7 year old interested in science. He’s not quite up to reading the text but he understood the book and enjoyed the illustrations.
