My ancestor; so I am biased.
I read this book after discovering Sir William Johnson Bt is my ancestor, I have now read a number of biographies on him and they are all very different. This one is by an American and is just about the best one as far as I am concerned except for one thing. Flexner also wrote several books on George Washington and none of them mention the clash between Johnson and Washington. So this book contains history about Washington that has been air brushed out of modern American history. Washington was a very naughty boy and Johnson was the good guy in that clash. This book also tells the story of the poor who got to America only to be used and often abused by those who got there first. I would probably never have read anything about the history of colonial America had it not been for this ancestor. I am very glad I did as I also found another ancestor who paid her fare to America by selling herself into slavery for seven years. This was indentured slavery and that story is terrible as after seven years they had no value so many finished up starving to death as they were not worth the food they ate.

Great Bio of Unique New Yorker
Flexner, the greatest biographer of George Washington, knows like no other the period of William Johnson who died 1774, on the eve of the Revolution. The subject, an Irish born American, was one of few colonials to make the Royal honors list. He achieved more than crown appointees and colonial officials, but usually had to triumph over their opposition to do so. He throve in Iroquois culture and both imperial and local politics in a unique era. It was an exciting time made more so by Flexner's insights.

Absolutely outstanding book
This is an absolutely outstanding book... well written... well documented... and very enjoyable. Sir William Johnson was one of the most fascinating men in American history. For anyone who loves early American history, to me, this is a must read.
