A book worth reading, hard to put down

good guide but dated
This book provides some good advice on the coming out process. Some the activities are a little monotonous but you can skip around. My one criticism is that it is dated. A lot of what is said is still relevant, but times have changed and so has technology. Closeted teens now have a lot more resources through the internet, movies, and television. Not that these drills aren't relevant but they assume a certain alienation from gay culture that is becoming less and less prevalent in the age of netflix and when a new state is legalizing gay marriage every other month.

I got it a while ago and I still haven't finished reading it. That must mean something...
I got it a while ago and I still haven't finished reading it. That must mean something... Books have to compel me to read them and this book really didn't compel me to read it.

Meh
Reading a book on how other people came out to get ideas as to how you should come out got rather boring. I just left the book out in the open and that did the trick

From a friend
“I’d consider myself completely straight, but uncontrollably coming out as gay to anyone who will listen after reading this book. Told the clerk at the grocery store I’m loud and proud. Confessed my undying thirst for dong to the mailman. The book is an incredible mind warp. “ Parker

I do not recommend this book
This book is really unhelpful and has ideas in it that I disagree with. For example, it compares homophobia to addiction. Homophobia is willful ignorance ingrained in one by society and oppressive beliefs, addiction is not the same on any level. Also maybe it is because this book was written so long ago- but some of the terms in the book are not inclusive, there is hints that bisexuality is a confused stage between straight and gay. The ways to 'out yourself' are not affirming. I do not recommend this book.

Great Coming Out Help
I recently accepted to myself that yes, I am Gay. My family and most of my friends do not know about me being gay. Many of whom I already think they suspect me of being gay but do not say anything.I used to be confused about myself and thought that I am bi-sexual. But now I know that it is not the true me. Sure I like to be with girls and hangout but sexually I prefer to be with another man. That being said I will give my thoughts on this wonderful book. This is the first book that I bought about coming out. This book not only breaks down steps in how to come out but it gives real life examples from other people's coming out stories. The pace of the book is set at your pace. You continue through the chapters as you progress in your coming out.Not only does this book answer questions that you might have it also answers questions that your friends and family might have and how to deal with them.I can say this book is very helpful in understanding not only yourself, but your family, friends, and the gay community. This book is not only for you, but for everyone in your life.Though I am not out of the closet to those very close to me, I have made steps in coming out thanks to this book.I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have.
