Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments

smart, accessible overview to land art and Michael Heizer
Heizer the man may be an ornery cuss (as we say in my side of the saloon) but this book is a delight. It puts land art into a social context and then looks at the importance not just of Heizer but of Smithson and other "out of the gallery" practitioners. If you want a visual survey of Heizer's work A to Z, this can't be it (for legal reasons, image access was restricted); if you want to know what it is, where it came from, and why it matters, this book answers all of those questions cogently and with a human touch. No art world jargon here, just good thinking, good writing.

Outstanding
This is an outstanding discussion of the artist Michael Heizer and his contributions--and conflicts with--modern art. It situates Heizer within multiple dimensions--biographical, historical, artistic, and emergent. An engaging and informative book, that also explores the human engagements with the creation of monuments.

This book puts not only Michael Heizer but the whole land art movement in context
I liked the narrative, the background and the intimations of an earlier art world and, particularly, an earlier now lost Nevada culture. What did I "use" it for? Information...and good information. well writ, too.
