With England as an ally, much of the truth about Ireland has been kept from our media, However, this
book is the beginning of a TRUE understanding of why things have happened in Ireland, England and Scotland. Leon Uris weaves his characters well, but there is much truth in every story. Some of it is just finite details, that no one can refute. There was never a problem between the Prods and the Paps, until England moved in Scottish Papists and gave them land and home, in Ireland, if they would swear to be Protestant. Many were doomed to death by starvation, or homelessness due to high English land lease prices, so Ireland seemed a safe get away, and they turned what once were two strong, loving and revering countries into a mishmash of English trickery. Charles Stewart and all the Highlanders from Scotland tried to stop much of this, but anyway, read the book. It is an epic, sweeping, beautifully written, and colorful story of the reality of Ireland's troubles, and the love story of a Pap and a Prod, and the rich history makes for a real "my nose isn't coming out of this book until I am done" experience. I have read this several times, it really makes me understand the Irish in our family tree line, and why certain things are how they are, our ancestors lived this, so I want to understand it. My grandmother, aged 105 gave me a lot of information, and I am 43 now, and have been encouraging my children to know their history. My grandmother, even with a college degree, was turned down for bing Black Irish, they didn't care about the rest of her lineage, IRISH NEED NOT APPLY. So, she got on with a newspaper and was the first woman reporter in a plane in the Midwest. Read this book, if you have not. You will understand why I have no orange in my home, and why no claddaugh ring should have a crown on it, unless you defer to an English rule.. It is super to really feel how THE TROUBLES before and after, were.

Love of Ireland
Well researched telling of the struggles facing the Irish Catholics on behalf of Northern Orange men imposing their will for centuries.

Trinity Review
A sweeping saga of several Irish Catholic and Protestant families during the tumultuous years 1885-1916 when Ireland was under the thumb of the British Crown and a few very wealthy Protestant Barons. The story covers the abject poverty of the Irish Catholics, the relatively better off Irish Protestants and the Barons who controlled their lives. The struggle for Ulster is the main focus and involves love, treachery, rebellion and the partition of Ulster under the Home Rule legislation and ultimate Irish independence in 1922. Over 1000 pages but well worth the effort.

Read in Eire
This was a great book to read while traveling in Ireland. It explained and contradicted much of what I saw, heard and experienced there. But that's the nature of its people, who are the most helpful, friendly and gabby in the world.

Best work of historical fiction available
An epic telling of Ireland’s centuries long struggle with Britain. A similar faith in nationhood birthed the United States. Epic

Very entertaining and educating
I loved this book! It's a novelization of a period in Ireland's history. Don't be put off by the length--I didn't want it to end!

A beautiful heartbreaking story
This book was a stunning heart-rending story with nary a victory for the Republican movement. They never gave up despite the mountain of obstacles. The movement kept fighting for their rights. Many a chapter left me breathless and hurting for the sheer villany of the oppressors and to what lengths they would go to to retain their autocratic lifestyle. It sadly seems to me, in our current world status, we still have a long way to go to learn the lessons of the past so we can move in a positive direction for our children and our children's children
