You should read the book first to understand this movie, overall a great movie! I watched it with my friends <3

Wholesome family movie
Wholesome family movie that was enjoyable to watch and also teaches a lesson about protecting wildlife, an owl in this case.

Hoot -- great book, really good family movie
First, this is a really good movie for both kids and parents. If you've read the book, the movie follows the book very well. Of course, the movie doesn't have the depth of the characters like the book does (what can you do in an under 2-hour movie?), but the movie is a fun movie with no foul language, no violence, and a storyline that both parents and kids will enjoy. The worst thing that happens in the movie is that a school bully gets tied to a flagpole in his undershorts. Both my 8-year old daughter and I read the book and we loved the movie. We were disappointed that the movie didn't stay at the theatres longer (frankly, Hoot is better than most movies we've seen). It didn't get enough publicity or something. If you've read any of Carl Hiassen's adult books, Hoot is in the same genre, yet doesn't contain the level of macabre humor -- he's scaled it back to what kids should encounter. Hoot has several other reasons to see it -- it was filmed in Florida and has some great cinematography of the Keys, the music is mostly Jimmy Buffett, and Jimmy has a cameo role as Roy's teacher -- that's a lot for one movie! The movie DVD will be a great investment, as it's a movie to see over and over. The book is also a great read -- a nice gift for kids 8 and older.

It's better for kids.
I remember liking this movie when I was a kid. But we had just as a class read the book and then watch the movie. Now as an adult I have read the book to my kid and the kids really enjoyed the book so we decided to watch the movie. The kids enjoyed the movie like I suspected they would since we just read the book but me myself I don't think the movie is really all that good it's kind of really got some bad acting and there's some story points that are missing and I always know that you shouldn't compare a book to its movie but the book was definitely better in this case. As an adult I don't think I would even bother watching this one again. But it was definitely cheap on Amazon right now so that justifies that I suppose. And the kids enjoyed it so there is that

True Story
This is a wonderful family movie. Kids get together to stop a construction company from bulldozing an area that has owls living in the ground. The construction company has lied & hidden information that says this is the natural habitats for these owls. So glad the kids were able to get it stopped so the owls could stay in their home.

Quality
The movie was playing great until about the last 15 minutes. It looked like it turned into a foreign movie as the speech did not match the lip movements...

Hoot yes but no party in
Nice film for the whole family . I personally would have liked to see more off the owls. One thing I detest in life is bullies. The film shoes to much of that neanderthal creature, which was the wrong message,in my opinion ,way over the top. Perhaps it's an American thing. Acting was passable, the storyline a bit patchy at times. All in all a good watch

Hoot Hoot!
Up until a few weeks ago I had never heard of this film or book before. But after watching Percy Jackson a few weeks ago & noticing how good an actor Logan Lerman is I decided to buy another of his films and Hoot was the one I picked. It might sound a boring film when you think about it "3 kids trying to save owls" but please trust me, it is really a great film. Logan's acting is amazing as always & I really would recommend this film.

A Good Family Movie
Firstly I must admit I purchased this (along with the book) to help with my godson's study report. I didn't expect much from it, especially considering the size and quality of the book. I thought it would be the usual trash that companies kick out for students to watch in class. I was so wrong. It's a nicely done family movie predominately about two young boys: Mullet Fingers (played by Cody Linley) and new-kid-in-town Roy Eberhardt (Logan Lerman).Roy is being beaten up on the school bus by bully Dana (Eric Phillips) when he sees a bare footed boy running next to the bus. He gets away from the bully (by breaking his nose) and decides to follow the boy.Over the first part of the film we watch Roy trying to make friends with the misfit Mullet Fingers, who turns out to be a runaway. Then the second part of the film shows the attempts to save these cute little burrowing owls. It's a film about family, friendship and the environment. On the plus side the film manages not shove the environmental issues of development and loss of habitat in the viewers face, like some other films do. It's subtlety may well be lost on some, but it is nice not to feel preached at.It is a film that we will be watching again, on those afternoons when there is nothing on tv.Unexpectedly, this film is significantly better then the book. The film manages to pad out the 39 page, large print, children's book, to make the story much more convincing and enjoyable; and the actors (even though they are so young) bring a believeability and depth to the characters that is missing in the book. Together this makes the whole story much more fulfilling than the book. For once we have a plethera of extras, including commentary, subtitles and several "making of" documentary shorts. In my opinion this is a good film, and well worth the time, school study or not.

Basically a kids film
But viewable by all the family. It has a strong environmentalalist theme and Clark Gregg portrays the baddie really well.
