Why Wait? Get your data moving...with great tips from Joes2Pros
With SQL Wait Stats, Pinal Dave, Rick Morelan et al. of the Joes2Pros series take the reader deeper into the world of Performance Tuning by providing a look 'under the hood' of SQL Server and how to leverage this knowledge to improve database performance. You will begin understanding what Wait Stats are, why they are important and how to incorporate them into your database tuning design right from the first chapter. Each chapter and concept is thoughtfully laid out and logically builds on the other, making the material incredibly easy to learn.Every chapter is introduced with a real world, non-SQL based, story that helps you easily relate to the database concept you are about to learn. The concept is then clearly described and multiple code examples that actually work! There are also several screenshots from SQL Server Management Studio showing actual query results to help you confirm the results of running your own queries. The end of each chapter includes a 'Points to Ponder' section provides a review of what has been covered in the chapter, and serves as a quick reference of each point covered to help refresh your memory in the future. The closing of each chapter includes a review quiz that uses a powerful, yet often unheralded, learning technique in that the answer key gives insight into the 'why' of both the incorrect answers and correct answer. This is an excellent way to help the reader comprehend what they are learning.SQL Wait Stats is an excellent addition to the Joes2Pros series. Having read each of the books in this series, I am convinced that it is a Killer Application, being a comprehensive suite of educational products that could only have been designed, tested and implemented by an expert who truly understands the needs of a SQL Beginner and is committed to providing the best tools possible to help you achieve one success after another. If you want to really learn more about SQL Queries, SQL Server Architecture, SQL Programming or SQL Performance Tuning with Wait Stats; then make sure you get your hands on a copy of the appropriate Joes2Pros book and reward yourself with the knowledge and skills that will soon be yours to use and share with others.Want to save money, while saving a tree... Very good book, but explanations was way too "beginner" for me
Very good book. In very simple and understandable way are explained the concept of waits and most important (in my opinion type of waits). There are also good examples and useful links at the end of the book for further reading. My remark to the book is that the explanation of the topics is way too for beginners with examples from everyday life. I am not new to SQL server but I am not so familiar with this topic. This is the reason I buy this book, but this way of explanation is too simple for me. I would prefer to have explanations more in terms of SQL.

Great SQL reference in the palm of your hand
This book could be called 101 Best Wait Stats Solutions, and the title would only be inaccurate because there are more than 101 solutions in this book. There are almost 500 different wait types in SQL Server 2008, and that number is only going to increase over the next versions, so learning how to deal with wait stats now is very important. Even better, the author (Pinal Dave) has said in his blog that he will answer questions from the book if you contact him, and he has already addressed a few questions in recent posts. He also mentioned that this will be an "evolving" book, with updated versions that have reader's questions answered, so we have that to look forward to, as well.I think the best part about this book is that the author uses real world examples from his own experience in dealing with SQL Server, and also encourages feedback from his readers about what to add and improve. It's almost like taking a SQL Server wait stats course, but you just have to pay for the book. And since this is the Kindle version, you pretty much have a great reference book in the palm of your hand - no need to drag around a back pack full of heavy books. The graphics from the examples in this book are preserved in the Kindle version. They are still easy to read on the black and white Kindle screen and there are no problems with the formatting.Over all I have to give this book a full five stars!

Excellent book on SQLServer wait times and solutions
Being a SQLServer DBA for about 7 years and a database developer for even longer I can say that this book certainly helped understand better the wait types found within the sys.dm_os_wait_stats table. Solutions provided by the author(s) based upon their experience give you a starting point from which to resolve problems under duress (which when something goes wrong you certainly are under duress to fix it).Excellent book. Read this as a primer to "Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting" or in conjunction with it.All up I highly recommend this book for all DBAs.

A bit basic...
...but as a desktop help, you cannot fault it. Does not go into great detail but does not need to and still gets the point across.
