Tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen was born in Detroit, MI, on December 11, 1972. He is a member of the third wave of Young Lion mainstream jazz players. As a young man, he was influenced by the great musicians who stayed in Detroit, but upon his arrival in New York City his real apprenticeship began, as he worked with such notables as George Cables, Betty Carter, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Frank Foster's Loud Minority big band, Butch Morris, David Murray, and Wallace Roney.

Swinging Tenor
This is a wonderful album. Allen, along with bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston forge ahead on a program of originals that just cooks from beginning to end. In his comments for the tune "Indigo (Blue Like)", Allen states that "the most avant-garde thing that a jazz musician could do today is try to straight up and down swing" He and his cohorts certainly seemed to take that statement seriously. Lord, does this swing from beginning to end.Allen comes solidly out of the Sonny Rollins mode, in the sense that melody and rhythm are key. This is not to say J.D. sounds like Sonny, he's his own man and has his own sound. But, if you like Sonny or Joe Henderson, you'll positively love this piece of work.

Very cool record!
This record swings hard, has a great vibe, and is well recorded. I am a big admirer of Rudy Royston''s drumming and he is clearly enjoying himself here. Compositions are not complex and the program could be a bit more varied, but this is still a worthwhile set of music thanks to the sound and interaction of the band.

POWERFUL AND SOLID JAZZ
This is a solid album, like the four Allen previous CD. Is jazz, pure jazz. Only three elements, bass with Gregg August, drums with Rudy Royston and Allen in tenor saxophone. For me JD Allen is one of the greatest tenor in this moment. Powerful, intensive . and very spiritual. Is in the same line of John Coltrane, when I heard him my mind blow up.Is really a great event each new Allen CD. Probably for some people is a little old fashion, for me is pure. Another great album from JD Allen, probably his best trio album until now

A great saxsophonist with toughtful touch
I have seen j.d allen yesterday 27.11.15 in concert at Zappa club Israel. A great saxsophonist with toughtful touch. This trio shall remind you the powerful bombastic drummer elvin jones , the geat saxophonist John Coltane and the bassist Jimmy Garisson with on "Crescent" album. J.d allen is a unique and very toughtful playe grow from the tradition of coltrane quartet. For those who heard Pharoah's Children (criss cross label), in this album j.d allen plays differently but still between the lines maintains the reminiscence of his unique playing at criss cross label. This is his best trio album , highly recommended !!!
