During the early stages of the eighties Transformer cartoon there were only a few toys upon which to base the Decepticon characters. One of the main ways they bolstered their ranks was to feature more Decepticon jets, later known as Seekers (a practice emulated many years later by the Netflix ‘War for Cybertron’ series). When on Earth this usually meant clones of either Starscream, Skywarp and/or Thundercracker standing around in the background. However, in the less common scenes set on Cybertron this wasn’t entirely sufficient as the Seekers featured had somewhat more involved roles than just standing about. This, therefore, resulted in several re-coloured and effectively ‘new’ Seekers appearing prior to the toys of Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge being released. Grabbing the attention of fans, these intriguing Seekers were later endowed with names and personalities and became fully fledged characters. The Rainmakers, as they came to be known, first appeared in the episode ‘Divide and Conquer’ under the command of Shockwave upon Cybertron. They primarily became renowned for their garish, almost eye watering colour scheme. These War for Cybertron figures are the first time the three of them have officially and correctly been released in a set. All three are straight re-decos of Siege Starscream presented primarily in one colour and, unlike the other Siege Seekers, possessing exactly the same face sculpt. They also unfortunately have the weaker chest plate/panel which was improved on later Siege Seekers. The most famous of the three is clearly Acid Storm. He is the only one who has been released as a toy prior to this collection. Capturing the effect of his onscreen appearance, he is a bright fluorescent green that is certainly eye catching.Neither of the other two have that glaring colour scheme. Nova Storm does come in a reasonably bright yellow, but it lacks the neon glow. Ion Storm is even more subdued. His blue colouring does, at first glance, make him resemble Siege Thundercracker. However, alongside each other it is noticeable that he is a slightly darker shade. And although there is a similarity in tetrajet mode, as robots they look significantly different due to the blacks and greys of Thundercracker. The Rainmakers aren’t as individualistic and lack the attention to detail of the other Siege Seekers based on this mould – Skywarp, Thundercracker, Red Wing and Hotlink. However, if you can get hold of this quite rare boxset, it is a wonderful opportunity to finally obtain these characters, especially as Ion Storm and Nova Storm have never had official figures before.
