Very Helpful!
The Sacred Prostitute: Eternal Aspect of the Feminine (Studies in Jungian Psychology By Jungian Analysts, Vol 32)I have been in therapy for a few months now and my therapist mentioned this book. It had immediate resonance for me. A divorce and a subsequent heartbreak with a lover was what propelled me into therapy, feeling that I was way out of touch with my power and sense of Self. I was also looking at books that would help me deal with my feelings around infidelity in my relationships. But I opted for this one, feeling intuitively that I needed to stop looking outward at all of my "stories" and start looking inward toward connection and rebuilding within myself. It was definitely the right move! While this book has raised many questions, it has also started weaving a beautiful tapestry in my psyche. I have a voracious appetite to read more, learn more, explore more and pay more attention to my dreams and intuitive sense. I have recommended it to many men and women. For me the main point of this book is that we are all way out of touch with our Feminine self and that this is symptomatic of the Patriarchal world we have lived in for centuries. Whether or not you agree with the her "proofs" (which, is a very Male way of approaching this book to begin with!) she couldn't be more right with how out of touch we are. Her premise is Jungian in that it looks at our behaviors as a symbolic clue into what's going on in our Selves... All you have to do is look around to see that there is an extreme imbalance in the favoring of Masculine values over Feminine ones. She does not think that we should swing to another, opposite extreme, but rather embrace the Feminine (the COMPLETE Feminine) once again to achieve balance and harmony. The author manages to articulate concepts which generally dwell in the intuitive realm... things that I have felt but could never put into words. As a woman I find this book extremely validating. And in terms of the men in my life, I have a deeper and more compassionate understanding of their behavior as well. This book has been an integral step for me in becoming whole again.I FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!

Deep but relevant study of the "taboo"
I am currently working on a novel that incorporates many of the themes covered by the author in The Sacred Prostitute: sacred sexuality (hieros gamos), Mary Magdalene and comparison with the Virgin Mary, the Black Madonna, patriarchy, etc. It contributed nicely to my knowledge of such subjects but took the concept of proper development of one's feminine side (in men as well as women) to a new level, especially relevant at this time when there is a resurgence of the ugliest in maleness with the current political situation in the US.As noted in other reviews, it makes a strong use of Jungian psychology and relies heavily on dream interpretation. It reminded me that there is much still to be learned and gained from studying Jung and his work. Nevertheless, it served to pull together, confirm and advance many of the themes I encountered during research for my novel. Highly recommended for those seeking a more profound understanding of our combined masculine-feminine nature.

Aspect of the Feminine
I am doing work with School Bullying and LBGT youth services. I find that most harassment is religious based intolerance aimed at the Feminine. Jungian Psychology demonstrates why our culture is so unhealthy and how a balance of masculine and feminine is the way to achieve healthy lives. Of the many Jungian books I have read, this is the best for my purpose and I just purchased extra copies to use in my work. The Abrahamic religions have a long history of abusive practices against the feminine. The bullying and hatred shown against women and feminine men (Queer, Fags, Homo, Gays) is illustrated by the term FAGGOT which is a bundle of sticks used to start fires. This term is a result of the Catholic Church's campaign to burn midwifes at the stake after Augustine determined that women were meant to suffer childbirth for the "sin" of Eve. So young feminine boys (sissies) were used to start the fires at the burning of millions of women. The abuse of feminine children continues today in many churches. Women forced to suffer and even die rather than terminate a pregnancy. This is a great book for understanding the unhealthy relationships that are so common in our schools and society. Sexual abuse of children is not about gratification, it is about POWER and CONTROL.

Amazing book
I love this book. It provides scientific knowledge on the subject of sacred prostitution and offers an other view on this topic. There are many discourses, like if there has ever been such a thing as sacred prostitution in ancient society and also about the existence of matriarchal societies. This book shows that it doesn't matter if it actually existed, but looks at it from Jung's archetypal perspective. How can a Sacred Prostitute as an archetype inspire us today? How can it help us develop and grow as a person and as a society? orLearn more at [...] or [email protected]

sex is bad, and religion is good
Incredible reading as I research forming a sex-positive church. It's all about how our modern culture has placed sexuality and religion on opposing sides - i.e., sex is bad, and religion is good. If we can properly worship and respect the sacred feminine and embrace our sexuality as a core part of our spirituality, then both men and women can fully integrate and find harmony and bliss. Beautiful passages and history to accompany the psychological components.

Regular....
Será por que ya he leído mucho sobre el tema, o por que tenía demasiadas expectativas por la persona que me lo recomendó, pero el libro está escrito con una forma bastante académica y no es una lectura fácil, entretenida o que enganche...Pone ejemplos de muchos sueños de sus pacientes, y si estáis familiarizados con el trabajo de C.G. Jung, conceptos de animus y anima y conocéis algo de la veneración de la Diosa en la antigüedad, no os aportará muchas cosas nuevas.

All men, all women, please read!
Dr Qualls - Corbett is to be congratulated on writing this enlightened and enlightening work, risking, as she surely did, the brickbats of her sisters in the so-called feminist movement, a movement whose rigid ideology, bigotry, simplistic stereotyping and intolerance merely mirror the characteristics of the patriarchy that they supposedly loathe. Equality of pay, education and opportunity is a matter of straightforward fairness, common sens and justice. After that, individuals should be left to pursue their lives as they see fit. And guess what - men and women are different! In this book the author shows how merely aping male stupidity is not a path to fulfillment for a woman any more than it is for a man. She states: "Ruled only by a conscious, masculine position, a man is cut off from his soul. The principle of Eros is not operative, consequently the man remains detached, unable to experience either his own emotions or his spiritual nature."This is woman's sacred gift to man exemplified by the Holy Whore - to humanise him with the gift of The Goddess' love. Quoting the author again: "From the union of the human and the divine, the Divine Child is born. The Divine Child is new life - life with new understanding, life which carries an illuminating vision into the world."Since there are no longer Sacred Prostitutes (patriarchy allows only the profane version - strangely, men suffer from patriarchy too, just differently)Dr Qualls-Corbett offers a chapter for men on the relevance of the Sacred Prostitute to their anima development, and a chapter for women on her relevance to feminine psychology, thus putting that "illuminating vision" within all our grasps.Read immediately before or after "Phallos: Sacred Image of the Masculine" then record your dreams!

Vital and essential for everyone
I really enjoyed this book. The author details and represents the historical presence of the Sacred Prostitute. This was in a time and place where the people worshipped the feminine aspects of the divine and celebrated nature and the body as holy. A Sacred Whore was a temple preistess of the Goddess. She gave her body to strangers, in the temple, with respect and love for the Goddess. The book explores who she was historically, and then explores what she means to us psychologically. The author explores the subject in reference to both men and women's experiences.Don't be put off or offended by the words prostitute or whore. The author makes clear distinctions between the sacred and profane definitions of these words, and the varied psychological dimensions of them. Unfortunately, today we only take these words as sexist and derogatory slurs. This is why it is vital for women to explore their feminine nature on a deeper psychological level and empower themselves by using such terms positively to describe the nature of the Goddess of Love who through the virgin whore brings about a total transformation of life in which the physical and spiritual are one!I hope lots of women can be brave enough to read this book. I hope men also are brave enough to see this as having exactly the same relevance to them also!
