Perfect. I learned on one of the small, crappy rods just to make sure I could if needed. After I got comfortable with a little one I decided to get a big one as my main rod. This thing throws some serious sparks, and is effortless compared to a little rod.

It’s a ferro rod with a premade paracord lanyard and striker. Considering the rod by itself is like $10, paying an extra $5-6 for the lanyard and striker is an excellent value. Be advised if this is your first time using one of these that you will not generate sparks unless you first scrape off the protective paint coating. I used sandpaper to take it off. Since the exposed material is more susceptible to rust, I store it in a small ziplock bag in my pack. Works well and generates abundant sparks.

Bought this for our "just in case" storage. Appears very well made. My husband said it was great quality, as he was military, and this one is better than the ones he has used provided to him. But that was years ago.

Wonderful item! I used this camping and lit my starter material with ease. I really got some nice flaky sparks that shower down onto whatever you're using for starter material. It's not magical, if you're trying to start small sticks or bigger material it's going to be difficult, but any kind of shavings or easy to light material, this thing will set it alight with ease.

After I submitted a review rating this product at 1, Bayite Customer Service reached out to me and worked hard to help me figure out what was wrong. After exchanging several emails they sent a replacement rod and 3 extra strikers at no cost along with a link to a video showing the rod in use. At first the replacement items worked no better that the original. Finally I realized I was tipping the striker at 45 degrees thinking to engage the edge - that just rounded the edge but keeping the striker blade nearly vertical to the rod gave a rewarding shower of very hot sparks (no instructions came with the rod - the video helped). Holding the original striker vertically also restored the squared edge and that striker began to work well also.The Bayite rod is very hard and I found I could not get good results unless I rested the downstroke end on a solid support (hence the 4 out of 5 rating). Glad I bought the 6 inch rod with the paracord handle.Their customer service is outstanding - they initiated the communication to help me get better results and stood 100% behind their product. So, I stand corrected and happily have submitted this revised review. AK
