I just want a real time tracker in case my dog gets out of the yard so I can follow her path on my cell phone to locate her Is this suitable for that?

It is nowhere near real time!  By the time it would alert that my dog is out of the yard, he could be gone for miles ( border collie). No help from customer support on false readings. Has said he is across the street when he is right next to me. When he went to my neighbor’s, said he was about a block away. I do not use it. Have only spent much time talking to customer service and testing it. Now can’t get out of AT&T yearly contract without paying 43.00.  I am a dog trainer, and my dog is well trained to come to me so I do not need it. He is 6, and been able to be off lead since 18 months. I’d just like to know where he is when I cannot see him in our woods. So, no it’s really not reliable and NoT for tracking a lost dog!!! Teach your dog to come with a whistle.

How often does it give a gps reading?  every minute?

The GPS refresh rate is defaulted to every 6 minutes and performs this scan when your Whistle is not connected to WiFi. You can lower it to a minimum of 3 minutes, but it will effect the battery life.

Is this safe for a 6 pound cat???

That might be too small. We recommend it for pets weighing 20lbs or more but we do have customers using it on smaller pets. You can always try it out and if it's too big and/or heavy, you can return it. If you purchase it from Amazon you have to return it within 30 days or you can purchase it from Whistle.com and you can return it within 90 days.

will this help me find my cat if he escapes my apartment? And I don’t have to worry about charging it all the time?

As long as you have good AT&T LTE coverage in your area, you'll be able to track your pet if it goes outside your safe place and home wifi range. Cats can be a little tricker to track since they hide in places that are hard to pick up like under cars or in thick bushes etc. The battery life of your Whistle depends on how much time your cat will spend outside your safe place and wifi signal. The more time outside, the faster the battery depletes since it's no longer in battery save mode. We offer a 90 day return window to test Whistle out and see if it's a good fit.
