The Daughter Detox Question & Answer Book: A GPS for Navigating Your Way Out of a Toxic Childhood

As transformational as the other Daughter Detox books
I'm so grateful for Peg Streep's work. Even as someone in her late 50s who's done decades of healing, therapy, study, and tough decisions, there's always another step in the healing process. Crucial to that process is self-awareness - painful though it may be, and Streep helps with that. And part of the up-hill battle of having had a cruel mother is how programmed we - and society - are to resist that truth. Streep's work helps me see layers in which such denial still has a residual effect in me. But more than that, her work also helps me celebrate and affirm the hard work I've done to move my life and my son's life into a much healthier place. And that is something to celebrate, as Streep understands. The Q-and-A format of this particular book makes for a quick, targeted read - you can easily find topics that feel most relevant to where you are right now.

FINALLY! Mothers CAN be destructive to the well-being of a child.
And, as the outcast in my family, I am NOT the BAD guy for calling "foul!". This is not a prescription for how to heal all your wounds. It IS a roadmap so you can know what caused your woundedness and, therefore, you can heal it to become whole and healthy in your relations and relating skills with yourself and with others. Highly recommended if you are willing to dive into the questions that pertain to you AND write to reveal YOUR story about it. You really can't heal what you don't know is broken.

Where was this book 40 years ago...
This is the companion book to Daughter Detox: Recovering from An Unloving Mother and Reclaiming Your Life, and both really helped me when, 17 years after (finally) cutting off my unloving mother, she returned with a vengeance, sending texts and threats so creepy and horrendous I had to forward them to others as "proof" of what I'd experienced in the pre-cell phone years. In these 100+ questions, Streep provides very hard-hitting information I needed to hear 40 years ago! I was fortunate to be able to eventually accept that my mother didn't love or even like me--she varied between tolerance and hatred--but how much easier the journey would have been with the Daughter Detox books by my side, with Streep providing experience and evidence (anecdotal and research-based) about so many others who have endured this same experience. This week I listened to this book on audio as a much-needed affirmation of cutting off my toxic mother, despite well-meaning outsiders chanting the "But she's your mother!" Siren's Song of the Motherhood Myth. Streep's experience with her mother parallels mine in many ways, and I appreciate Streep's straightforward analysis and advice--especially when she's acknowledging the shame and cultural stigma of breaking the Motherhood Myth--that all mothers love their children, and they do so unconditionally. No, all mothers do not love their children, and some even hate them. I wish these Daughter Detox books had been available 40 years ago. But at least they are now. This is an important message that needs to be in circulation. Highly recommended.
