How does this media compare with the original savio compact skimmer media? is flow rate similar? coarser or finer?

Never used the compact skimmer media. But, This material has work great for me in my pond filter box.

Can it be used in a bog filter under River rock?

I think it will work for a bog filter. Prior to my waterfall this was similar to a filter that I used.

Does this product float or sink when placed in water?

The answer is that they float. I but this plus the blue/white filter mat and they float without anchors. When heavy with algae, the sink. I have found pieces of them in the filter. They break apart decompose over time.

Is this filter rigid enough to cut a sheet and slide flat into our filter holder?

Yes. I found it a bit more rigid than the pre-cut pads purchased from the commercial hardware store.
