Square Root Games Backgammon- 14.5"

For me, this is probably the most authentic a backgammon experience I can get. I never saw the felt/vinyl/dice cup setups until the mid ‘70s. Before that is was all wood, usually homemade, and 8mm dice. My father and grandfather used to play on the porch of the family ranch in Selma, California: two guys sitting in folding chairs, hunched over a small table. It was noisy. When one of them was making a big move, they would smack the pips on the board. When my dad and uncle played, they would taunt each other. It’s probably going to get banged up and funky over the years and that will trigger all kinds of happy memories. You aren’t going to get that from a felt board.This is definitely handmade, and has a distinct homemade vibe. It’s well built, and a perfect size for home and travel. I especially like the absence of built-in pip rails. It makes for a bigger playing field and the way the game pieces are stored is sheer genius. as you can see my picture, everything fits perfectly and stays in place.This is exactly what I was looking for and was well worth the price. I’m sure my preferences put me in the minority, but for the rest of us who never thought felt and dice cups did much for the game, this is your board.It comes with 12mm dice with rounded corners. They aren't very good. I’m ordering 8mm square dice. If you do the same, steer clear of the big bags o’ dice here. They’re poorly-made toys and not suitable for actual play.

A basic wood backgammon set but better than most I have looked at. Comes a with unique removable holder (for checkers and dice) instead of side rails making. I prefer this as a 14.5" travel unit because the board will take up less space if you're playing in a coffee shop. Currently, priced under $40, it worth it. The only caveat is if you do not like the sound of dice hitting wood. This is the old world charm of playing backgammon. If noise is an issue for you look at the felt lined ones.

Nice board but not practical to have chip and dice holder separate from board. Would not buy again.

Nice backgammon board, Birthday gift.

This is a beautiful game! All wooden pieces, great case with magnetic closures and the perfect size. I got it for my boyfriend for his birthday and we love it!

It was great to get reacquainted with this game from our youth. It's a nice set.
