Become a skilled teacher or manager of group interactions.
An oldie now but good advice for educators or group leaders even today! It was a sort of Bible for group experiences that can still resonate today. If you are in the forefront of Education today or want to be, I might suggest you track down works by Barrie Bennett. Bennett is one of the leading gurus in education today and speaks and works internationally. Knowing and using his work can bring amazing changes to student learning and classroom management.Tribes was my beginning but Bennett's work will take you much further into what makes a good teacher!Bennett is a recently 'retired professor' from the University of Toronto Faculty of Education.

4th Grade Tribes
This book was more than worth the price. Everything in this book is useful and pertinent. I love the concepts... learning by doing, and developing a sense of community (the "tribal learning community" suits my 4th graders very well.) They have readily accepted and are learning the concepts I gleaned from this fantastic book. We study California history in 4th grade, so my groups now have the names of our California tribes. The ideas in this book are easy to put into action. I would like to see an updated version done... (I have the 30th anniversary issue copyright 2006) and/or some in-service trainings on Tribes. (A useful inservice training would be a nice change from the usual brain numbing experience!) Tribes is a proven quantity... so maybe we should pause in our constant search for a new way to reform education and try revisiting/updating the ideas that have worked in the past!

Do NOT buy!
The title of this book sums up every chapter of it. This book is trying to not convince you that learning communities are good, but rather just trying to make you spend more money on products and conferences from the company Tribes. This program is somewhat successful I am certain, but the book is extremely repetitive. One should use learning communities in their classroom and make everyone feel safe and cared for, but I do not need to read an entire book about how the approach works and how these people would implement it. Find what works for you and your students, rather than what Jeanne Gibbs, a non-educator, observed working in a few select schools over a couple years. Even though this book is in its 30th anniversary edition, it is quite apparent that it has not undergone much change or editing. There is a future statistic in this edition for the year 2000 that was most definitely proved inaccurate already!

Great for upper primary students.
A great book to complement any professional teaching library of adolescent stuudents. I recommend the book in creating great cohesive classrooms and tribes of kids for any start of year work. My kids all work beautifully together with rarely any hiccups, this book helped a lot.

An oldie but a goodie!
This is a great book that was bought for a new career teacher who cannot put it down. This changes the way I looked at groupings and classroom management and had always had a positive effect on our classes.

Use another seller.
The book has dents and bends all over the front and back cover. It looks like it was used - I didn't pay to get a bent up book. I would highly recommend this book BUT from another seller.

So resourceful! Recommend it to anybody that handles group settings on a regular basis, not just with youth. Excellent read!
