Locke & Key Volume 5: Clockworks

This was one twisted episode that really highlights the past and the stupidity that allows all things to come to be. Yet the darkness and horror of the twisted mind and soul one touch can bring is scary but plausible. It drags you down and buries you in logic mania fixing up many of the loose ends from previous books.

Excellent, well thought out and a consistent world created by the authors. They never break the conditions and rules of the reality they have set out and the authenticity of the characters, their behaviour and their backstory shines through as a result. The artwork gets better each time and always works hand in hand with the script, with wonderful pace and ingenuity in the choice of each scene. I honestly haven't read anything as good as Locke and key in a very long time. It is rare for a story to simultaneously engross and shock while maintaining genuine concern for the characters, especially in the comic book medium, where so often the audience is treated with an ephemeral and juvenile attitude. Buy, read, enjoy.

If you were starting to despair at the end of Lock n' Key 4 'Keys to the Kingdom' that things were still no clearer and there was no real end in sight, fret ye not. Mr.Hill gives us a lot more backstory here and a definite sense that things are building to a suitably bloody crescendo. Rodriguez continues to excel, filling his panels with vivid imagery and lashings of claret. Just waiting for Omega to hit Amazon and hopefully bring a modicum of, if not joy, than at the very least close the door (arf) on these poor beleaguered characters.

This is a great series, mostly because it is so original. The graphic novels that succeed the best are the ones that are not formulaic and this pulls off some great ideas. The graphics are fun and the plot twists enticingly. It is well worth starting with the first volume and if you like it get the rest. My only worry is that the last volume is still being written, and I want it now !

Great graphic novel series with amazing artwork and storyline.

Title says it all, I wish more writers would learn from this depth of story telling and suspense. The series gets better and better, in this volume tying up many set up arcs from earlier on, with some well placed flashbacks done in an inventive method which doesn't feel forced at all. There is no doubt this is building to what promises to be a phenomenal climax.
