A fascinating read! The author's style is really engaging! Plus, lots of close-up photos of black bears in their "neighborhood" environs. My nieces and nephews marveled at the momma bear up high in her tree den, as well as the little cub being measured and toted in a pillowcase. I've read many Scientist in the Field books and this one is tops in my book! Great way to excite kids about real science happening in their own backyards. Not just black bears either! Chapter 3 covers other animals who are making themselves a bit too comfy in urban environments around the world including leopards in Mumbai, wild boars in Berlin, turkeys in Brookline, MA, chickens in Hawaii, and a new breed of eastern coyote in many parts of the US. Cherrix's reporting is impeccable and the writing crystal clear. Wonderful addition to home and classroom libraries.

In my backyard!I knew there were bear sightings in my neighborhood, but now I truly believed it. I bought a game camera and even caught some bears in my yard during the night.Intrigued, I went on a search for more information on bears. And that brought me to Backyard Bears. This book is very cool. Beautiful pictures. And great info on bears for someone like me, an average person with bears who come into her yard occasionally. A really good tip was to share with neighbors when you spot a bear. We do that now. Also, I check the yard with a flashlight before letting my dog out. Excellent, interesting, and fun read.

This book is a totally fascinating look at bears in urban settings. Cherrix has done exhaustive research and traveled with professionals who follow and tag bears in the Asheville, NC area. Not only did she research, but she experienced these amazing creatures first hand. Young readers will be completely captivated.

I purchased this for my father-in-law who has ...Backyard Bears! It's a cute book that gives great information on how to help bears in the wild who happen to also be in our backyard. Beautiful find!
