Very good but some issues
After working my way through most of this book I have a few observations. First, I have enjoyed the versions of these common fiddle tunes -- they're varied and interesting. However, there are a few deficiencies. The biggest one is the CD itself -- all of the pieces are played only at full speed. While this is helpful in understanding the overall rhythm of a piece, it is not a very good aid to learning for those of us who only aspire to that level of proficiency. I found it necessary to use software to slow down these pieces when working on the more challenging sections. Another issue is the way the music is laid out in measures of 16th notes. This makes for rather long measures as opposed to 8th notes which (I think) is a more common way to present music in the bluegrass community. This book/CD would be greatly improved with slow and fast versions of both the pieces and backing tracks.

Youtube is a good companion for this book.
This is for a beginner, like if you picked up a mandolin 2 weeks ago and have practiced every day since. I guess I'm past that level. I hope to learn the ones I don't know out of here, and also hope my child who plays fiddle can learn them, so we can JAM! If you are thinking about picking up an instrument that is fun, you have got to try mandolin. It is a blast even to play by yourself. And the fiddle has the same string notation, so you are learning two instrument at once.If you go to a jam, these are tunes with which 80% of pickers will be familiar. So a very good starting point.

very helpful
This book has helped me advance in my playing. The transcriptions are accurate, very similar to (if not the same as) what's on the disc, and the song selection is good. Really accelerates the learning process when the recorded music matches the transcription. By far the best book of the 4 I've tried. Also, if you mute one audio channel, you hear the accompaniment only, which is great for practice.

Baseline instruction.
This is a good selection of most of the baseline campfire bluegrass jam songs. The transcriptions are clear tab and the arrangements are simple enough to get you started. The examples on the CD are well played so you can gage your progress. If you are new to bluegrass, or new to mandolin, this collection will quickly get you up to speed.

Excellent Tool
i completed the book recently and am joining in at the picking parties here in Nashville. This book is a great work of classic standards with arrangements that are more advanced that most other players typically learn. Outstanding!

Great series
I first bought the guitar version of this series and I love it! I bought the mandolin version for my husband. We'll be making beautiful music together!

CD was defective
A new Oak publ. music book, with plastic enclosed CD at the back. Very disappointed to find after opening it, trying it on2 CD players otherwise working perfectly, that the CD played only guitar track, and that just for seconds, otherwise it buzzed and whirred. I tried on 3 different occasions. Tell me if there's any way to replace the CD except start all over.
