Optimal Control

good for reference, not for learning
The material presentation is OK.It is neither too easy or too hard to read. The strength of this is that it provides a bridges optimal control to other various topics.(LQG, game theory, reinforce learning, ...)However, this book is a heavy reading. It contains many "examples", in which each example takes 4 ~ 8 pages long.(it takes 15 pages to show 3 examples!!)Then, you may ask why not skip the examples. You cannot skip them, because they are NOT problem-solving, but derivation of another theory. If you skip it, then you will lose significant portion of theory. My question is, why those theories are NOT in the main text, but in "examples"?Overall, this book is excellent for reference, but NOT good for learning. It doesn't contain a practical example. Also, the long "examples" make reader to see only the tree, but not the forest. For learning, I would suggest Optimal Control Systems (Electrical Engineering Series) by Naidu.

New
Almost new, it doesn't seem like a used book and it's much cheaper than the original price and the bookmark contain in it is useful

Good text
This is the first book on optimal control I've read, so I can't compare it to others. The writing is dry (just like any textbook). But there are a lot of good examples, especially the Matlab examples. There is also the level of mathematical rigor that you'd hope to see in any controls text. One thing I think it lacks is an appendix with a short review of linear systems theory; I have to keep referring back to my linear systems book for important formulas.

Is a good book bit you need to know your science and math, in some places they do magic tricks and is pretty boring.

Ok book.
The book was a little hard to understand the material. I used the book maybe 2 times during the course of my Optimal Control semester. I wouldn't recommend this book unless its all you could find!

Great book on optimal controls
I had the pleasure of having taken my control courses at Georgia Tech while the author, Frank Lewis was a professor there. He was probably one of the best professors in this area amongst a stellar group of control professors. He explanations and presentation of the topics were concise, clear, and extremely applicable. These same traits are present in this book. One of the main knocks against control theorists is that they tend to refrain from using real world examples to illustrate their point. Dr. Lewis is quite the opposite, he believes that the real world problem is key to understanding the theory and he is never shy in using those examples. The number of examples may be a problem here, afterall, students live and die by the worked problem to get to understanding. This book is an excellent introductory guide to the fascinating world of optimal controls.

Bad.
Inexcusable amount of typos. Most of the figures are so faded they are hard to interpret as well. I'm impressed it's a third edition with this many errors. The content would be good... if it were decipherable.

Better than previous release
I am studying my PhD in optimization at the University of Reading and I use this book as reference every day. It is quite complete and the examples are clear. The author always keep focus on the main subject of control theory.
