Pleasant surprise!!
I have followed the career of Joan Rivers for many years. I am 8 years younger than Joan. I connect with her approach to the realities of life and being "for REAL" yourself. I have quoted her "Can we Talk?" many times when confronting situations in my own life where I knew hypocrisy was in play. To me, it was absolutely fascinating to read about where this lady came from, - the details of her growing up and her true Grit! I just expected to read a book about a stand-up Comic and ended up getting a whole complex story of a life journey unlike anything familiar to myself and my journey - Except, the book is full of lessons to be learned and I found myself underlining a lot of what she shared because it related identically in principal to elements of my own life journey. A Good Read but not as good as the next book "Still Talking" which I could not put down for 3 days. I just finished it and am going to do a review for it also!!!!

Best Comedian of My Lifetime and Hardest Working!
Will forever be grateful that I lived in the era of the inimitable Joan Rivers. Her father set the framework for her strong and resilient work ethic and her mother set the platform for stability. I had to wait forever for this book and can't literally put it down. I bill myself as Joan's Number One Fan for a reason. And, to learn that my older sister and her sister shared the same name elevated my adoration for her higher if that's possible. She didn't grow up poor and her rise to fame took place on hot coals. I truly believe Johnny Carson aimed to keep Joan to himself and she knew this which is why she never really disparaged Johnny. His selfishness towards her was understood by a remarkable comic, undoubtedly the best comedian of my lifetime, including the men. The walk, the prance onto the stage with both hands perpendicular to her side ready to come together for that question: "Can We Talk." This is an excellent book all the way through. Lessons learned and tears. Love forevermore to Joan Rivers.

Not "just" a celebrity memoir
When Joan Rivers set out to find her way in the world she had a few directions she could go. Into department store management, which she tried for a while, or into acting, which she loved and hated. During the struggle to define herself, she went through her version of a journey familiar to everyone: from the disorganized dreams of childhood to an effective, meaningful relationship with the world. This memoir does such a great job of guiding us through that journey, introspectively and authentically, that I forgot I was reading a celebrity memoir. The memoir takes no trouble to gloss over inconvenient, combative situations, or the raw edgy mistakes of the beginner. The example of her tenacity is incomprehensible. How does the creative mind draw on strengths for so long, through so many setbacks? Now, with the memoir wave in full swing, I bet a re-release could still be a smash hit, because the story contains a timeless message: through adversity to the stars.

a great glimpse into a very interesting and funny lady
Man, I really loved this book. Joan Rivers was a surprisingly deep person with a complex and moving life. I love biographies and autobiographies, and as far as Joan Rivers goes-- she wrote a few-- this is definitely the best of the bunch. I loved getting to know her from the very beginning.Gives you a great look behind the scenes of stand up comedy and writing for tv, and auditioning too. So I think it's a great book for aspiring performing artists of all kinds. Performers do not have it easy!

honest and entertaining
No one writes an autobiography like this anymore. I was expecting a mediocre story but It is suprisingly well written.

OMG, a must-read for every aspiring entertainer
OMG, don't even start me on this book. A bible! A guiding light to every aspiring entertainer. So uplifting. You get to understand what Joan Rivers went through in her 20's to get to her success. Immense barriers. And nothing broke her. If you ever had family that didn't support your artistic aspiration, if you ever allowed yourself to veer off into a career that was "the correct one", if you ever were terrified by the rejection of your artistic beginnings - so was Joan. When you read the book, you will be blown away by how she handled the rejections. And how it all paid off amazingly.

Misrepresented condition
The book was not in "Very Good" condition as represented. A section of the book was loose rather than attached to the binding, and the pages were discolored with age. Haven't started it yet, but I'm. worried the pages will come loose from the binding as I read it and turn the pages.

This is a blow-by-blow account of Joan Rivers' long struggle ...
This is a blow-by-blow account of Joan Rivers' long struggle for a career and eventually stardom. She really put herself through it! Her account of her first stage role is hilarious - the play was put on in a hotel room, and one of her co-stars was a girl with a ski-jump nose who was equally determined to become a star. Joan Rivers was quite a writer. She must have kept a diary. RIP, Joan.

very good
The first Biography of an Icon. Filled with wisdom and she just gets up and up and up again. Specially liked the page where barbra Streisand waves from her limo with her poodles paw at a wet, cold and exhausted Joan who is trying to make it to the gig on time. Great insight into early nYC
