Exquisite Corpse

Gloriously grotesque
For a few years now I’ve been unable to sit down and just enjoy reading a book. I’m either too distracted or the writing isn’t gripping enough. This broke that cycle. The prose is so incredibly gripping and the story is unique and haunting. It’s very pornographic at times and is so incredibly gay in its writing.Without spoiling too much, the book follows four different people who’s paths end up meeting in one way or another. Two of these characters are sadistic serial killers (among.. other things) and their actions are described in grotesque and vivid detail. This is not a happy book, but rather burrows into the writing styles reminiscent of the deranged and perverted writings of Marquis de Sade. While this book is heavily pornographic in nature it’s not necessarily a romance novel. The sex isn’t gentle nor typically consensual. It’s more reminiscent of the popular and infamous “eroguro” genre used in a lot of Japanese fiction where a character ends up sexually abused and graphically murdered. That all being said, if you have the stomach for that and have a good hunger for disturbing media, absolutely buy this book and read it. I promise you that you’ll find it impossible to put down. Also trans rights (the author is a trans man) :D

Beautifully written gore by the bucketload
Exquisite Corpse was a vast departure from the last couple of splatterpunk books I read. The prose is beautifully written, with the prettiest description of torture and cannibalism I've ever read.We follow four men at the height of the AIDS panic in New Orleans: Andrew, a serial killer who fakes his death to escape prison; Jay, a rich predator wading through the tourists, looking for his next victim; Luke, down on his luck and screaming out his anger about his HIV status to the world; and finally Tran, a young man caught up in this dangerous whirlwind. Andrew's perspective is told in first person, while everyone else's story is told in third person, giving us a close and personal view to the path of death he carves through every street he walks. Tran and Luke's intertwined narrative provides a desperate conflict filled with near misses and tragedy. There isn't much of a plot to the novel. It's more of a slow, inevitable climb to a terrifying conclusion you can't look away from, the exact opposite of a love story. And there is, of course, gore, murder and cannibalism by the bucketload. It's not for the faint of heart, but I would definitely recommend it.

GROSS.... I loved it
If you’re squeamish, this is NOT the book for you. If you’re not generally into horror, this is NOT the book for you. If you like happy endings this is NOT the book for you.So who is this book for? The horror lovers, the true crime fans, people who are looking for a proper gory read. And for those people, including myself, it’s AMAZING!The story centers around two serial killers, who serve as our main characters. They’re strangely likeable despite all the horrors they commit and that makes the story compelling and disgusting all at once. This makes it fascinating to read as you get a peek into the minds of these killers. There are lots of interesting and in depth scenes about their thoughts and psychology- along with lots of killing scenes, which to be honest are what you’re coming for if you’re reading a ‘splatterpunk’ book. And this book really delivers on that. The world of this story feels bleak, honest, and unfair. This isn’t a fun little romp to curl up with, and some chapters where HIV is discussed at length were uncomfortable. But I’m aware this was probably the intended feeling.Over all if you’re interested in gore, slasher stories, or crime stories in general? This is for you.TRIGGER WARNINGS:Basically everything

Gory and horrifying!!
I did not expect this book to be so graphic and gory. It was epic! A really good read! I had to read something lighter after finishing this book. So if you’re into gory and twisted horror this is right up your street!!

Meh
I kept hearing how this was supposed to be one of the most shocking books out there .. it’s not.yes there are gross bits but it’s slow for the first 3 quarters and then rushes the story towards the end.Was on the verge of being ridiculous.

Exquisite... Aptly named.
Having already read and adored 'Lost Souls' I came to this book with very high hopes and can gladly say I wasn't disappointed.I won't spoil the plot for anyone, but suffice to say if you have a sensitive stomach I'd avoid this book. For those who don't... this is why it is good.Ms Brite has a way of making the most depraved, disgusting and sickening acts almost arousing to read about... No other writer I have encountered has ever managed this (and I read between 80-100 books a year). This in itself was a major plus factor of the book. The characters are also engaging and very convincing if you remember that most of them are adolescents. Nearly all the characters caught my sympathy, including the two serial killers, though surprisingly, one of the more virtuous characters was one I found quite irritating.I've noticed a growing pattern in Brite's books in that you do not leave them feeling entirely happy. These are not books designed to uplift. They are designed to disgust, enthral, and incite thought about the more taboo subjects in life. Not for the conservative reader I'll admit, those of you who want that should stick to the Richard and Judy summer reading list, but this is an incredible and fascinating book and well worth a read.

Graphic and Sordid.
This is not for the faint hearted or those with delicate sensibilities. It was quite scathing on the gay community too as all of the gay characters were portrayed negatively. Very graphic regarding the sex scenes, the murder scenes and the sex/murder scenes. It deals with many taboo subjects including necrophilia, HIV/AIDS, cannibalism etc. It is well written and quite disturbingly enthralling.I couldn't wait to finish it for a number of reasons, to hope that the protagonist(s) got their comeuppance, and also to calm my nerves and sense of repulsion. Some images will stay with me sadly. Vile!

Eroticamente grotesco
O livro promete um conto sombrio sobre serial killers e abuso, mas entrega muito mais. Diversos temas são abordados, tabus e parafilias que te envolvem e induzem a pensar como o autor desejava.Fiquei de luto por ter acabado tão rápido.

Beautiful and twisted
This book has been on my list for quite some time and I am so happy to finally getting around to reading it. You really get captured right away and I read it in one sitting. Very dark Humor, beautiful writing style and a fast pace, combined with some quite disturbing imagery evoked by the artful descriptions. A twisted love story, if you will.

Good for sickos but NOT the general public
One of my favorite books of all time; it is difficult to sum up any other way.Many/most human beings will have serious issues with the content of this story: Other than de Sade's "Juliette: Vice Amply Rewarded" (and perhaps "120 Days of Sodom",.. and, certainly, my own personal writing), I have not read anything nearly so gratuitously graphic and obscene as this. There are explicitly detailed descriptions of rape, necrophilia, torture, murder, mutilation, and cannibalism... it is NOT AT ALL meant for casual consumers (only suitable for serious gore-hounds and/or anyone otherwise "into" any of the subject matter above).I didn't find the story to really have much of a developed plot, or to make any sort of philosophical or intelligent point, no matter what the intentions were in writing it. The writing is well done, however, and easy to read and follow. The story IS told from the perspective of a serial murderer, two actually, and also from some other minor (non-serial murdering) characters. It's basically a version of what could happen if Jeffrey Dahmer and Dennis Nilsen met (and Dahmer was rich , sadistic, and lived in New Orleans [because everything spooky happens there, I guess]). I hesitate to say that the serial murderers were believable as psychopaths (well, Jay maybe... but not all serial murderers are psychopathic anyway, and not every psychopath is a Robert Hare caricature). The characters were static, shallow, and predictable, and made no attempt to be likable or "sympathetic" to the audience (the latter is a bonus to me). I didn't appreciate the seemingly metaphysical nonsense around the beginning. The story was TOO SHORT, overall, to really make much of a point beyond just being a tragic, undeveloped "love" story. For me, the things which saved this book were the violence/gore and the novelty factors of a proudly irredeemable, unapologetically serial murdering narrator and the nearly erotomanic obsessive "love" between two serial murderers.Whoever it was who mentioned a film being made of this, I hope that could happen... I'd definitely watch it.
