Great story
We ordered this book to help our 7 year old gain interest in reading. She loves wolves so I thought this would be interesting for her. She loved it! She hasn't really been in to any other stories I've tried reading her so far, but this one she begged me every night to read to her and when we got to the last chapter, she only let me read her a page a night to make it last longer. The story is about a runt wolf who starts out life not really understanding his place in the pack or world. He struggles to comprehend how he can make his mark as the runt and fears he is a constant disappointment. We see him mature through his mistakes and finally learn how he can be a gift to the pack. It's a really cute story.

Poor packaging.
I love this book, but the package (of all 4 books) arrived really ripped up. the package was a larger (than necessary) bubble wrap manila envelope. Almost all of one of the sides was opened/chiseled/chewed up ! Very poor packaging and protection of the books. This book, my favorite of the four (a gift for a child) was buggered up at the top, so much that the green of the cover was rubbed off and was white ! This is unacceptable. The four books could have been bundled (rubber banded) and a piece of cardboard placed on both sides of the books for extra protection. That would have helped.

Beautifully told story of a young wolf
This wonderful story introduces us to Runt, the smallest member of a wolf pack. From the first day that Runt sets foot outside of the cubs' cozy den, his life becomes a struggle to please his father and to earn a different name as well as a place within the pack. He passes through adventures that are both delightful and tragic. Every event in his young life brings learning that will help Runt survive in a harsh world that grants no special favors to the small and cute. The book is filled with details about the social structure of wolf packs. The author clearly spent a good deal of time researching the topic, but the information is presented with finesse. The reader never feels that she is being taught. Instead the information is offered in tightly woven vignettes. Since there are complete stories within the greater story, this is an excellent book to read aloud and the book can be read in several installments by young readers with short attention spans. Almost any child would enjoy this book, even those with no special love for animals.

Life as a wolf
Pack mentality is key in the life of a wolf. Position within a pack defines who a wolf is. Runt, the smallest of his litter is given no other name by his father the pack alpha. He is treated as the lowest member because he is unable to prove himself due to his small size. This bothers Runt as he seeks to win his father's approval. In addition to his own struggles Runt becomes caught within pack politics. There is some unrest within the pack because one member wishes to become the new leader. This story describes how one young wolf fills his role within the pack and struggles to understand humans and the world around him. This is a well written book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in wolves.

Perfect Animal Story!
I have been searching for a novel study for my advanced 3rd grade readers to read during our nature unit. This book couldn't be more perfect! It is respectful to wolf behavior and invites the reader to get lost in their world. The story line supports the complexity of the characters and their relationship as they struggle to survive in the wild. The author brilliantly introduces the age-old conflict between humans and this predator while respecting the reader to make their own choice about the role wolves play within their own families and the world we share with them.

We love Runt.
Myself and my daughter (7) both thought this was a good book. She enjoyed the adventure and realistic perspective of the animals. It was very entertaining. She just asked me to begin to read it again as her bedtime story.
