Fretless Bass - A Guide to the Styles and Techniques of Fretless Bass Book/Online Audio (Hal Leonard Bass Method)

Really great information here
The feline living in my house bought this on my credit card, but I don't mind. I particularly love the section on using open strings to check your intonation. Solid tip. It's a fantastic collection of songs, but I can't believe they left out the work of Bakithi Kumalo. Anyway, listen to Jaco!

A Must-Have Fretless Instructional
This is the book for fretless fans, and it has a wealth of information for all ability levels.I found out about this book and knew I had to get my hands on it. I have other books in the Hal Leonard style series, including the Funk Bass one that was also written by Chris Kringel. I really liked his funk book, and knew I had to try this one.In short, it did not disappoint! It's a fantastic book on so many aspects of fretless bass. Kringel is a clear teacher, and he doesn't assume you already know everything about bass or playing fretless. His explanations are easy to understand, and he moves quickly, which will keep boredom away from advanced players. The CD that comes with this book is amazing, too, because there are audio examples of so many of the songs and exercises used in the book. Yes, other books have accompaniment CDs, but it is especially valuable with the fretless in hearing just what the player is doing and as a way to check intonation. So if you want clear and concise instruction with tons of great audio examples, this is definitely a book you'll enjoy and use.

Inspiring for fretless bass players
This book and the accompanying CD has been a great help and inspiration to better play and enjoy my fretless bass. The technique section is not real long or greatly in depth but I think this is good. I was amazed at how much these simple exercises improved my playing and showed me how to make some of the sounds that I have lusted after when listening to great fretless players. I also greatly appreciated the practice tips. I like that Chris lays out a logical approach to practice requiring only a modest amount of time and goes step by step. The 18 songs were well chosen. Sure, I liked some better than others and I will probably never be able to do justice to all of them, but they are all inspiring and really expanded my awareness of what a fretless bass can do. It is also very eye opening to see the complex and way-cool bass lines written out in music and tab. For me, an intermediate bass player fairly new to fretless, this is like a great Christmas present. Thanks so much Chris Kringel.

Fretless Bass
I had been away from fretless bass for a few years and decided to try to find a more detailed method book than ones I had previously used. This definitely fills the bill. It covers basic theory, technique, history of the instrument, thoughtful hints to improve intonation and get a great sound, and exercises and songs which build in complexity while taking you through a wide range of musical styles. The accompanying CD is pretty well done and enables you to hear the bass part clearly in the context of the arrangement. I have noticed a few errors in the transcription on "Hocus Pocus" -- the tab line seems to be correct but there are a couple of wrong notes in the standard music notation. However, it is much better in terms of overall content and presentation than other fretless method books I've used, I thoroughly enjoy it, and I feel it will definitely make me a better player.

Not Much Fretless Information
If you are already familiar with electric bass guitar, and are wanting to extend your knowledge specific to fretless bass, this is not the book for you. There is very limited information about fretless bass in this book; the basics are discussed briefly. The book contains more general bass information. However, the bulk of this book is devoted to sheet music of songs that happen to have been recorded using a fretless bass. Not really what I was looking for. Also, when I ordered this book, Amazon sent another book instead, mistakenly labeled and barcoded with the title for this book. Another reviewer experienced the same problem (and got the same Blues Bass book instead). I ended up having to acquire this book elsewhere.

If you thought you knew anything about fretless bass, ...
If you thought you knew anything about fretless bass, you don't until you've worked through this! I had no idea about some of the things you could do with a fretless until I opened this book. A real repository of different techniques and opportunities for the fretless player.
