Clare SearsArresting Dress: Cross-Dressing, Law, and Fascination in Nineteenth-Century San Francisco (Perverse Modernities: A Series Edited by Jack Halberstam and Lisa Lowe)
B**I
A vivid look at nineteenth century San Francisco society
This is a wonderful book that zooms in on a subject-matter that has largely remained under the radar. Sears does a beautiful job of examining the ways in which gender normativity intersects with immigration, class, sex, criminalization, and politics. Moreover, Sears lays out very clearly the ways in which law constructs social norms that continue to plague society today.
