Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate spiked after adding
I have an established low tech tank (5 years) and added live plants 4 months ago. Wanted to boost their growth so purchased these based in the favorable reviews. Within one day of adding these 1.5” below the gravel substrate, my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels skyrocketed. I scooped out the gravel in the sections where these capsules were and removed piece by piece the pellets of this fertilizer. By the next day all levels were back to normal. I do weekly water changes and monitor ammonia nitrite and nitrate biweekly and have NEVER had an ammonia or nitrite spike. Nitrates tend to creep up, hence the weekly water changes. There is no other explanation for the ammonia and nitrite spike. That has never happened to me in 5 years.
