Stand Out Basic (Stand Out, Third Edition)

I made the regrettable mistake of selecting this horrendous textbook for my Level 1 non-credit ESL class, apparently dazzled by the lovely photographs into thinking the pedagogic quality would match the design quality. Nope. WOW, it's bad. It's unbelievable that ESL professionals had anything to do with this book - the videos, articles at the end of each unit, and much of the audio is placed WAY too high for this level, rendering it useless. The workbook is serviceable, but that's it. The supplemental material is abysmal, as if a first-year, lazy MATESOL student were procrastinating his assignment in a Curriculum and Assessment class and upchucked it all in half an hour at 3 am the day before class. It's filled with garbage exercises and is not even formatted properly. This book was so bad I ended up having to supplement heavily with Future Intro and Out and About, both MUCH better books which I'll definitely choose next time.

I'm a language trainer. This book is a nice supplement to my lower level students. Grammar and thematic content are well integrated and logically sequenced. Audio is entirely available online. As someone who works in public adult education, the works-based alignment standards are helpful as well. I do not regret my purchase!
