Really good small binoculars
I bought these to take on my daily "dog walk". The idea is that they are small enough to slip into a coat pocket, without slinging a more meaty pair of binoculars round my neck. I'd say that they are about 80% right for that. They fit fine into a winter anorak pocket ----- but now we are getting warmer, they are having to be carried as I don't wear a heavy coat. The optics are very good, and the 7X magnification is just right for casual use, My only issue is about protecting the lenses - there's a detachable rubber cover for one end (which can get lost easily) and no lens caps at the other. Having said that, the glass is fairly well back inside the body, so they should be safe from accidental scratching. The best thing that I like about these is that they have a long eye relief, and so are very good for use with spectacles..

Solid good value.
The Maven 7x28 binoculars provide a very decent bang for your buck. They are well made, waterproof and robust - good for any outdoor use - and the all-important optics are good too. The image is bright, colour-neutral, with chromatic aberration almost imperceptible. Other reviewers have noted the less-than-generous field of view; these are not wide angle binoculars and I would put the angular field at about 50 degrees, which the brain easily adjusts to and is an acceptable compromise at the price point. The 7x magnification makes for fatigue-free viewing. There is a very slight progressive focal divergence from the centre to the edge of the field. This leads to problems with critical focus unless the inter-pupillary distance is accurately set, as both eyes need to be exactly in the sweet spot for best results. I am fussy about this, but others may be less so - it's not a killing issue. If you pay twice as much and choose carefully you will get better optical performance, but this is definitely not an inferior binocular. The compromises needed to reach the price-point have been very intelligently set and the result is solid good value. The binoculars come with eyepiece covers, but buy the Opticron 34mm objective lens covers if you want more protection for the front elements (they are a tight fit but work fine). If this is your price point and you need a compact general purpose binocular you would have to search hard to match the Mavens.

Very good performance
I bought these for popping in the jacket pocket when the 10x42's would be too big/heavy. Very sharp bright image and I find 7x28 an ideal opportunist boggling bin specification. The supplied neck strap is rather too big making it difficult to roll up an stick in your pocket but I had a spare boot-lace sized one to fit. The diopter on my other bins is usually set towards the - side but these come up as zero. No big deal as theres plenty of range to play with. The eye relief has 0 to 3 settings and I use No2 so no problem there. Theres a single hinge so they dont fold up as tightly as the double hinge. They are supplied with one lens cap pair where 2 would be more appropriate. You can fit the lens cap on either end. The images will impress and focusing is easy. I noticed that I was spending more time looking at the subjects rather than fussing over the adjustments, and well, that's the point isn't it!
