Yes, when you extend the probe it automatically turns on.

Q: Can this be used to take swimming pool/hot tub temp? All the pool thermamoters on Amazon get mixed reviews. on

I don't see why not. I did a test by checking water temperature from my kitchen sink from cold (59 degrees) to hot (119 degrees). These temps were measured with my Kizen meat thermometer and an Industrial laboratory thermometer and they both measured the same exact temperatures through the 59 to 119 range. Hope this information helps.
