Digitally remastered and expanded edition including two bonus tracks. In 1973, Barbra Streisand went into the studio to make this album, one of the first (and still considered one of the best) Classical crossover recordings. This unique collection of art songs and arias was originally released in February 1976, with its striking cover portrait by Francesco Scavullo, and has never gone out of print. Classical Barbra rose to #46 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in 1976 and is certified gold in the U.S. Thirteen-time Grammy- winning producer Steven Epstein remastered the original recording for this reissue, the first since its original CD release in 1987. Most importantly, it contains the first ever release of two additional tracks recorded during the original sessions but never available until now: two of Franz Schubert's best known songs, 'An Sylvia' and 'Auf dem Wasser zu singen.'

A PERSONAL BARBRA FAVORITE NOW MADE EVEN BETTER
Reading some of the recent reviews about remastering issues, I don't think they got this new 2013 version, even if they did the Auto-Rip, which I think pulled the 1987 issue without the bonus tracks. I ordered the CD which came today and played it in my car. In comparison to the 1987 release, which was not remastered properly (with hiss and low volume), this new version is pristine and includes two bonus tracks not issued when recorded. I also did not know this album was started in 1973. I thought it was done in the moment for the February 1976 release.Great care was taken with the remaster to bring all the music to an almost-live level of sound. There is great separation of instruments. Strings literally sing along with Barbra's voice. This was one of the only classical recordings I owned, though as I grew older, added some of the composers to my collection and the great classical crossover artists of recent years (Sarah Brightman, Katherine Jenkins, Mario Frangoulis, etc). I also learned for audition pieces back in the day and trained with my vocal coach using Barbra's version of Beau Soir, which is the only lyric in French I can do without error. Otherwise, it is Oui, Merci and croissant. This album was a total surprise to me being re-released. Kudos to all involved for really making it a superb edition and shining it all up with the remastering. "I Love You" is currently playing and it never sounded this good. A "MUST" for all Barbra fans.Great album for quiet times, candlelight, and/or brunch!

Come On Folks, Figure It Out...
I cannot believe some of the negative reviews of this album. Give it a rest. It's obvious that Barbra is not trying to be Elisabeth Schwarzkopf or Joan Sutherland here. She is singing HER interpretation of these songs with her own instrument, which is a thing of great natural beauty. In fact, she is just doing what she's done her entire recording career; to sing straight from her heart. If you can't appreciate that then just skip it.That said, I do wish that she could have done more takes on a couple of the songs where her diction and some notes sound a bit muddy and strained. But overall I think this is a wonderful album that is a joy to listen to on a quiet evening.

Not much improved
I purchased the re-mastered Classical Barbara album because earlier versions of this album (vinyl, cassette and CD) have brought many hours of pure joy listening to her superb renditions of these great classical pieces--(and I had always hoped she would release a second volume of classical music). Since this album is one of the all time greats, I thought it would be worthwhile to purchase a re-mastered version. However, I didn't find the recording quality that much improved from the earlier CD, played on McIntosh equipment. The two new bonus tracks are not as desirable as the other content on the album. I suspect those who still have their old vinyl copies of this album in good conition will have the best listening experience.

The best!
I have several Barbra Streisand recordings and this one is my favorite. Why? Because this classical album shows her range of ability as a singer. Sure, she can belt out show tunes like nobody's business, but this kind of music takes finesse, grace, and even tenderness. Barbra does all of that so well on this recording. I've had the LP (vinyl album) since she first recording this music in the 70's. I am delighted to have it on CD now. I listen to this music at least twice a week. It is soothing to the soul.

Beautiful
Great remaster of an underrated album. Barbra's vocals are understated, controlled. Nice to hear the bonus tracks.

BARBRA,BARBRA,BARBRA!
This CD shows why Streisand is who she is; the ultimate DIVA! This lady can sing anything and on this wonderful collection she proves it. Barbra recored the album way back in 1973, and because the record label was afraid of low sales due to the classical nature of the material, didn't release it until 1976. What a treat for fans of Barbra and fans of classical music. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. I first heard this CD at a dinner party 15 years ago and pretty much forgot about it until I saw a few for sale on Ebay. I remembered loving it and immediately bought it through Amazon. I highly recommend this CD for all those people who simply love music. It will put you in a very relaxed mood, almost as if your home is filled with candles. Since I bought it I've listened to it at least 20 times or more and will continue playing it in my home. Don't worry if you can't understand what Barbra is saying if you don't comprehend the laguage of the song; you'll know it's still Barbra doing what she does the best. A few final notes ; Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Grammy for the album. And Streisand has personally stated that this was the hardest album vocally she has ever worked on in her career. In short a beautiful CD for any home.

Excellent!!
I already had the original release and wanted to have this re-mastered version with the additional cuts that were previously unreleased. Barbra Streisand is a musical instrument! She navigates classical music with passion and precision. If you have never heard her address classical music, you are missing something elegant and meaningful. This should be in everyone's collection.
