The music recorded by Ernest Greene as Washed Out has been nothing if not dreamy, and on his second full-length, Paracosm, he takes the dreamlike, otherworldly atmospheres of his music beyond the nocturnal, computer/synth-based sounds of their acclaimed debut, Within and Without. With its gorgeous execution and uplifting attitude, Paracosm is primed to be this year's summer record. Paracosm was recorded at in Atlanta with Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out – Within and Without) at Maze Studios.

If you didn't like Washed Out's previous efforts...
Then try 'Paracosm' anyway. I wasn't too fond of 'Life of Leisure' or 'Within and Without', especially not the latter, which was basically just good background music - not something I particularly enjoy, but it has its fans.'Paracosm' on the other hand is delightfully engaging if you want it to be. Very happy, powerful-sounding melodies, with a mix of electronic and acoustic instrumentation, and a more live sound (as others have pointed out). The songs flow together really well, often with background noise added in that sounds like summertime, the beach, people playing outside, birds chirping, etc. While the lyrics here are undiscernable (as usual for Washed Out), they almost demand to be read up on so you can fully embrace the euphoric feeling in the songs. If you take a look at them, they mostly all speak of paradise, running away, running away with another person, floating away, feeling better, or just embracing a happy feeling. They aren't super poetic in content, by any means, but their simple and happy nature actually fits the theme here. The songs are not exactly alike, which is always good. "Don't Give Up" is refreshingly fast-paced (or faster paced) and has the hookiest hook here; "All I Know" and "Falling Back" almost sound too happy to even exist, but without being annoying or distracting; "Great Escape" shifts tempo and feeling only slightly, here and there, making it probably the most dreamy song on the record. "It All Feels Right" is actually the one mediocre song on here, so don't let it sway you from the rest of this otherwise fantastic CD.Out of all the songs, though, the title track "Paracosm" is my favorite - the instrumentation is great, and gives it a lifelike, breathing feeling. It is one of the few songs on here that sounds a little sad. Greene sings to another person, telling them they're safe and "We're all alone now".. just really beautiful stuff. So yes: Highly recommended. If you're buying single songs, grab "Paracosm", "Weightless" (another gem), and "Don't Give Up", but keep in mind the songs sound really great flowing together as a whole!

wow.
wow. That is the only word I can use to describe this. I was holding back tears at work when I first listened to this (what a weenie!). To clarify: they were tears because of the beauty of the musical experience, no onions. This is a masterpiece in that not only is it well composed (IMO), well instrumented, well vocalized, etc., it is capable of transporting you to another place (coordinates unknown) and eliciting a feeling of weightlessness, as if the only thing limiting your ability to fly is the ceiling above you (yes, I forgot about gravity for a little bit and it was heavenly). It adds a whole new dimension to the listening experience. Very surreal. I am not too familiar with all of Washed Out's older stuff, I only know Life of Leisure and a few great Pieces on Within and Without, so I cannot comment on his past, but I like his present. Enjoy.

If you like the intro music to "Portlandia" w/Fred Armisen & Carrie Brownstein....
Then you'll love "Paracosm" by Washed Out as they did the theme song they play....it is from Washed Out's earlier EP "Life of Leisure" the song name is 'Feel It All Around'.....that EP and their earlier LP "Within and Without" are just super gazer-esque, gauzy, chill wave type music and "Paracosm" is another offshoot that does not disappoint. If you like letting music get in your head .....what I call #mindpharma style music that is relaxing, feel good from the first few bars, then you will enjoy all of Washed Out's songs.....I enjoy "Portlandia" and the theme song just grabbed me and I had to have it...which is how I now have all of Washed Out's songs! Enjoy and follow me on twitter as I will follow right back- @CU2MRO

Stunning!
If I had 1 complaint about this album it would be that it is too short! I have not heard a band in years with such a unique sound. Paracosm hooked me from the first listening and I have gone on to purchase EVERYTHING the band has released. I would describe the music as atmosphericand cinematic. The lead singer has an unusual voice that is extremely nice to hear. If you love The Cocteau Twins or the Doves, you will also love this band. I highly recommend Paracosm to anyone who likes their music with texture and verve.

Beautiful sophomore effort that crosses over genres...
This is an excellent to "Within and Without", with my main criticism being that it's a bit on the short end. Still, this is the type of album that you run from start to finish - it just puts me in a great mood whenever I have it on. I've heard some people typecasting this music as indie music for Jersey Shore-goers. Whatever, I'm not really interested in who else listens to it or what it's for. I actually hear a nice blend of genres in here, ranging from indie rock to drone electronica to 70's easy listening. If you liked the first album, chances are you will like "Paracosm" as well.

Starts strong, peters out a little.
Having heard his earlier work, and the teaser releases for 'Don't Give Up' and 'It all Feels Right' I pre-ordered Paracosm. Unfortunately, Washed Out's first two releases off this album are by far the strongest material. There's nothing wrong with the rest of the album, but it all feels wrong. Give up if you were expecting the whole album to jam as well as those two songs do. But if you're like me, you'll want to support this artist and buy the whole album to encourage him to make great music in the future. We know he's capable of it.

Create your own Paracosm!
It's been a while, but we knew it wasn't over! Washed Out's newest release, Paracosm is awesome! The songs are mellow and intricate and you'll find yourself closing your eyes and taking off for your own paracosm. I really enjoy the artist's ability to gradually crescendo to the ending climax, it felt like a movie playing in my head. Ernest Greene, it definitely 'feels right' as you sing in 'It all Feels Right'.The album itself fits in very well with their previous release, 'Within and Without' and the gorgeous Vinyl LP won't let you down. I almost want to hang it on the wall, but I'm too busy playing it!

Alucinante
Me ha parecido tan bueno como el otro "With or without", el mismo techno tranquilo y alucinante con unas melodías que te dejan relajado pero sin dormirte. Para conducir viene muy bien.
