Simple to learn, but has lots of depth
A total classic in my book. The movement system is so simple, yet elegantly mimics real-world Newtonian physics.Combat is simple, but that is kind of expected. You basically just roll a 1d6 to find if you hit the other ships or not, but things like missles and mines make it a little more interesting. Most of the fun just comes from maneuvering your ships around the map, and using gravity to "swing" around planets. The game is kind of like a sandbox. It gives you rules and tools to play, but not much as far as an official way to play. There is no one set way to play the game; it comes with some scenarios to start out, but you really seem expected to create your own ways to play. Line up ships and have a shoot-out, take a race around the galaxy to see who can fly faster around all the planets, or even have a month long campaign where you mine asteroids and fight pirates. The board is very nice. It was way larger than I expected and doesn't even fit on my gaming table, but it is heavy and feels very solid. The ships are just cardboard chits that you have to punch out, nothing too fancy, but I like the minimalistic artwork. All in all, I think this game is worth the MSRP asking price. Easy for anyone to learn, fun to play, but holds a lot of potential for replay-ability and depth.
