Everybody should have one!
Best geiger counter unless you want to spend many times for for lab grade instrument. It’s pre-calibrated for Cesium 137 but the dose reading is pretty much a guess. Geiger counters really only detect disintegrations, not dose. You probably have no way of knowing what isotope is triggering the counter and unless it is only Cesium 137 you’ll get a misleading reading. That said this is one of the most sensitive meters you can buy. Normal background in my home is 30-35 CPM. I recently ran this meter over my 6 mo old furnace filter and it was reading 220-240 CPM. I put latex gloves and a respirator before moving the filter and sealed it in a heavy duty plastic bag before disposing of it.

There is a catch for high altitude
The large detector is great, but not usable at moderately high altitudes. If you are traveling above 8000 ft. altitude, the detector will break, so be warned. The other warning they do not advertise, but noted in the operator's manual, is that it will not work at temperatures over 100F. so don't try using it in Death Valley, midday during the summer months. It is a great instrument, but beware of prospecting for cool uranium minerals at high altitudes in the Eastern Sierra.I keep mine in an air-tight box when crossing high mountain passes.

Good product
I cannot claim to be an expert in Geiger Counters. However, I am a Radiation Oncologist and have consulted with some of my physics colleagues. They agree (informally) that this counter is a good deal for the price range. It gives background readings consistent with those given by the US government (0.02 mR/hr). Personally, I would not trust the government or my (illustrious) peers to know (and care) what is going on.

Excellent Radiation Detector
I purchased this detector 3 months ago after considering several others. This one was a few more dollars than some but it has a pancake style G-M tube which has a larger surface area for detection, which make it very accurate. This unit is one of the best, if not the best, available in this price range that I have found. I have done an extensive amount of research on radiation and detectors since my purchase and I am convinced I made the best choice.I won't go into further details since the reviews by "Concerned Citizen" and "MJ23447" were very good and accurate.

Dead out of the box
Bought for school experiments and it had shown nothing but zero's out of the box. I am contacting the mfg. to see what can be done and will edit my review if they stand behind what they make, if not, save your money and buy one at a fraction of what this brand charges for their units, until then it is a very expensive paper weight.
