Yes it would be adjustable for a narrower openening at the bottom (and vice versa) because the top and bottom can be adjusted independently from each other down to 34" with the extension and 24.5" without the extension. For example: the top can be at 37" and the bottom could be at 34 (and vice versa.)" Hope that helps.

At the widest where the bars are bent at the gate, it's 2.5 " At the wall, there is a narrow space of 4 " before it angles down to the narrow width, with a great possibility of kitten getting head stuck. There a full grown cat might be able to wiggle through the 2.5, it would be a challenge with the danger of them getting stuck. I wouldn't recommend for cats, they are curious and will try anything.

our doorway is 60 in. is it 58in when using all the extensions? or is it 58in before using any of the extensions? thanks!

Not, not even close. It's 58" with all extensions. I have a 60" doorway, and it's nowhere near fitting properly into the doorway. I have another Regalo gate that is smaller, for a regular sized door, so I'm familiar with how they should be installed properly to actually work. Anyone saying it fits anything bigger than 58" does not have it in properly.

How wide is the actual swing door? Afraid my big hips won't fit through :)

I'm not sure why other's get different measurements but the walk through swing door opening is only 15.75" according to my tape measure and I am finding it too narrow for the high traffic area I want to use it on. I have to turn slightly to get through - I can't walk through without thinking about it.
