Is the central padding removalable? Trying to work out if it would fit a board game. Also is the foam storage section for characters?

I noticed this question didn't have a direct answer, so I tried it. A standard size FFG game (Cosmic Encounter) does not fit. The dimensions you'll need to fit a board game in will be at or below the size of DnD 5e's sourcebooks. If you take out the top's miniature foam, there is velcro on one side that you may be able to squeeze something a bit bigger in, but it'd be a stretch. I tried the standard Marvel Champions box with the foam removed and the velcro undone and it barely fit.

How large are the map straps?

I use the larger Chessex Megamat 34-1/2" x 48" and it fits with plenty of room to spare.

Does this bag have a padded bottom? i.e. will the corners of your books be protected

The bottom panel of the bag is the same material as that of the sides, approximately 1/4" thick and stiff enough to hold its shape even when empty. Likely some type of thin high density foam core. I'm quite satisfied with the level of protection. My bag has been in regular (weekly) use with 4 books, several notebooks and folders... easily 15+lbs loaded. Still as good as the day it arrived. Well worth the cost.

Does this work as a backpack too?

It comes with a removable shoulder strap and not the dual straps typically seen on a backpack.
