Earth's Shifting Crust: A Key To Some Basic Problems Of Earth Science

An Interesting Theory and a Fresh Perspective on Geology and Science
A vigorous and interesting discussion of Hapgood's theory of Earth Crust Displacement. The book is decades old, and much of it is obsolete science. But many questions remain unanswered despite recent advances in data collection and many decades of good solid research - not to mention the appalling distortion of geological science caused by the politically driven climate 'debate.'No one I think really believes in an Earth Crust Displacement at this time, and the theory cannot account for the speed at which the actual climate record shows climate changing. However, Hapgood covers theories - such as Isostasy - the theory of the planet's surface leveling off under gravity - which have been scrubbed from the politically correct text books due to the lack of any explanation for the anomalies. Just as a history of science, and a look into how science was once done, the book is worth the read.Hapgood offers a vigorous defense of his theory, and though it is hard to believe, it is not nearly as far-fetched as it might seem. Earth Crust Displacement may be real, and it may account for some phenomena such as climate variability not explained by Svensmark's Cosmic Ray-Cloud theory or plate tectonics. In Hapgood's earlier work he expressed skepticism of plate tectonics, but in this revision he accepts it due to the evidence found during the 60s. A few points he raises however have still not found a satisfactory answer. E.g. Why did the Northern Ice Cap scour Ireland and Britain from the northwest? Why was the North American Ice Cap centered on Hudson Bay? Why are do continents exist at all? Why are the ocean beds geologically different from the continental crust? How does 'subduction' work? And could it really explain the age of the ocean beds?Hapgood comes from a different era when asking questions may have made one a kook and an outsider - but would not lead to being targeted for personal destruction. His book offers younger readers a wholly different way to think about science - one in which the politics of fear and political correctness do not have to intrude.

Given as gift, after seeing Oppenheimer.
Easy reading. Recipient was thankful, enjoyed and appreciated it.

Shocking
Perhaps not completely accurate it holds a great deal of substance to be considered

Well worth greater consideration
I am still only half-way through and it seems like a great theory with a lot of explanatory power. However my copy, new from Amazon is missing two pages so far. I am going to see if they will send a replacement. Also, look carefully at the front cover, there is a typo there, though I haven't see any in the text itself. From the little I know about geo-science I think it is a little dated- maybe Continental Drift has been refined and updated. Still, I think there is a lot here that could and should be considered by specialists. All in all it seems like a theory unjustly neglected.

The so called "ice ages" are not as simple a problem as one might assume.
Hapgood makes a coherent case for his hypothesis of the shifting of the Earth's crust. Shifting Plates is the accepted hypothesis today. I have read that Einstein said the numbers do not work for Polar shift, this is after being intrigued initially. There remains an incredibly amount of unresolved questions even if one assumes Shifting Plates is correct, such as evidence of past ice sheets all over the world(India, Africa for example). Even if Hapgood is wrong, he raises a lot of interesting points.

Bought this one for my husband
Interesting and a little scary to read about the crust of our planet making a complete shift. Just have to remember that Earth is millions of years old and has been through many extinctions. However it is really fascinating material. Yes, my husband, would recommend the book to his friends.

Eye-opener
This is a wonderfully written book with alternative explanations for the shape of our world today. Now that we know the earth has experienced sudden, radical changes, this book is worth reading for a better explanation for how our landscape changes. Even if it's not 100% correct, it forces the reader to loosen up and accept the fact that the traditional explanations for our geography aren't good enough. I recommend this one.

Good book
Definitely a good book, However my copy is missing pages 85 and 86. They are not torn out, they just simply are not there. Pages 89 and 90 are also missing.

An amazing theses!
I particularly enjoyed this well-written and thought-provoking thesis of how planet earth evolved and assumed its present configuration of continental features and oceanic delineations. The author provides a plausible and believable theory to many questions still being asked - what happened to the dinosaurs, how did mammoth remains wind up in Siberia, etc. I had a copy of this book years ago and unwisely lent it to someone who promised to return it but never did. I was thrilled to find a new edition available and promptly ordered it!
