I am a musician and I go out to see many shows, so ear protection is a must. For high frequencies; guitars cymbals, harmonica, horns, they are great. They allow you to still hear clearly, just more quietly. I am a bass guitarist, and I must say, my sound is a little muffled. However, I don't think that can be helped. Lower frequencies are more difficult to hear. These don't have sound filters and they will reduce talking loudness. I use mine to muffle loud machines.
