Modern CPUs are incredibly complicated and a solid understanding of their design and programming patterns is necessary to fully utilize them.This book is a great overview of modern CPUs, general techniques and tools. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover and applying the knowledge learnt in the interesting exercises.Great job!

I used the first edition so much I almost got the PDF professionally printed. This new hardcover edition in full color is exactly what I needed. The content strikes a perfect balance — rigorous, but completely approachable for real-world optimization work.As someone who believes in supporting open source projects, I'm happy to support the author’s work. Essential for anyone delving into performance and optimization.

The content is unparalleled, and offers practical detailed advice on how to achieve good performance on modern systems. This is a must read if you care about performance.I am giving it only three stars for two reasons: the physical condition of the book is not appropriate for a $50 book--- it looks like it was printed with a mis-aligned inkjet, the paper is rough, some pages are printed entirely in blue, and the binding feels like it is about to crack. The prose needs additional editing for succinctness. There is no index. In short, the stuff you'd get with a professional publisher is missing.

A truly invaluable deep-dive into performance analysis, especially if you're running high density Linux workloads. The insights into the more arcane "perf" tool invocations make this book worth it alone. A true top-to-bottom how-to on analyzing performance issues in a methodical, reproduceable manner.Knocked a star off due to quite faded text in some parts of the paperback edition.

The only downside is that unfortunately hardcover price is fairly high but you will get your money worth if it's used during college (most college textbooks cost more and teach less on this subject) or for paid work.

I ordered the hardcover and just read through a few chapters. The hardcover edition has both good paper quality and print quality. If you want to dive deep into practical CPU performance-related topics, this is THE book to get!
